{"id":11700,"date":"2020-07-23T11:36:25","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T11:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=11700"},"modified":"2021-12-01T12:42:48","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:42:48","slug":"greenpeace-africa-cameroons-government-just-decided-to-massacre-ebo-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/11700\/greenpeace-africa-cameroons-government-just-decided-to-massacre-ebo-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Africa:  \u201cCameroon\u2019s government just decided to massacre Ebo forest\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Yaound\u00e9, 23 July 2020 &#8211; <\/strong><strong>Greenpeace Africa and local communities denounce a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/u\/0\/folders\/1fje8kN1pvUutXN0lyRAzFgOTut6A4ju7\"><strong>decision<\/strong><\/a><strong> by the Government of Cameroon to open up 68,385 hectares of pristine rainforest to logging. <\/strong><strong>The fate of a 65,007 ha zone of Ebo, also threatened with logging, remains unclear and must also be spared from chainsaws.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The 14 July decree to log a zone about half the size of London blatantly ignores requests by local communities and international NGOs to honor a 2006 government decision to declare the area a national park.[1] The move also flouts Cameroon\u2019s international commitments, and makes a mockery of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prc.cm\/en\/multimedia\/documents\/8402-law-n-2020-006-of-20-07-2020-gorillas\">endorsement<\/a> on 20 July for the international Agreement on Conservation of Gorillas and their Habitats.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cEbo forest is home to critically endangered primates whose death sentence may have been signed by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute with the approval of the President\u2019s office,\u201d says Sylvie Djacbou, forest campaigner at Greenpeace Africa. \u201cGreenpeace asks once again to cancel plans for industrial logging in Ebo forest and to designate it as a self-managed park instead,\u201d added Djacbou.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe majority of Banen people say no to this grave injustice,\u201d says Banen Chief Victor Yetina of the association Munen Retour aux Sources. \u201cEbo forest represents above all the identity of the Banen people and the association of Banen people will use all legal means to make the government reverse its decision,\u201d Chief Yetina added.<\/p>\n\n<p>Information obtained by Greenpeace Africa last month suggests that SEXTRANSBOIS, which prospected Ebo last month, may be the beneficiary of the new concession.
