{"id":11864,"date":"2020-08-07T11:44:41","date_gmt":"2020-08-07T11:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=11864"},"modified":"2021-12-01T12:42:34","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:42:34","slug":"greenpeace-africa-response-to-mauritius-oil-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/11864\/greenpeace-africa-response-to-mauritius-oil-spill\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Africa response to Mauritius oil spill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Johannesburg, South Africa, 7 August, 2020. <\/strong>Greenpeace Africa responds to<strong> <\/strong>reports about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/aug\/07\/mauritius-facing-environmental-disaster-after-striken-bulk-carrier-leaks-oil\">MV Wakashio bulk carrier leaking tonnes of diesel and bunker fuel into the Indian Ocean<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Happy Khambule, Greenpeace Africa Senior Climate and Energy Campaign Manager, said: \u201cThe Japanese bulk carrier, MV Wakashio ran aground around July 25 and is now leaking tonnes of diesel and oil into the ocean. Thousands of species around the pristine lagoons of Blue Bay, Pointe d\u2019Esny and Mahebourg are at risk of drowning in a sea of pollution, with dire consequences for Mauritius&#8217; economy, food security and health. The current oil spill on the reef near Pointe d\u2019Esny on the south east coast of the Mauritian island is likely one of the most terrible ecological crises ever seen on the small island country. This oil leak is not a twist of fate, but the choice of our twisted addiction to fossil fuels.
