Today is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WorldMeatFreeDay?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#WorldMeatFreeDay,<\/a>\u00a0a great time to\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmeatfreeday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">think about how the everyday choices we make about the food we eat can<\/a>\u00a0impact our health and the health of the planet.<\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/grnpc.org\/IgNeH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deforestation<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/grnpc.org\/IgNeE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">water pollution<\/a>\u00a0and climate change, the mark that\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/grnpc.org\/IgNeD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">industrial animal agriculture<\/a>\u00a0leaves on the environment is huge.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, livestock production is responsible for around\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/197608\/icode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">14% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 that\u2019s about the same as emissions from all road vehicles on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Animal agriculture is the largest source of the most powerful greenhouse gasses: methane and nitrous oxide. On top of that, growing crops for animal feed, especially soy, results in the<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/grnpc.org\/IgNeH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deforestation of rainforests<\/a>, releasing yet more CO2.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"Cattle in Animal Park Arche Warder in Germany. \u00a9 Sabine Vielmo \/ Greenpeace\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2018\/10\/b82bad73-b82bad73-127397_221343.jpg\" alt=\"Cattle in Animal Park Arche Warder in Germany. \u00a9 Sabine Vielmo \/ Greenpeace\" width=\"674\" height=\"448\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is\u00a0<a class=\"pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2018\/10\/f11de0d5-f11de0d5-20141203livestockclimatechangebaileyfroggattwellesley.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now overwhelming evidence<\/a>, that we can\u2019t possibly avoid catastrophic climate change if we don\u2019t address the impact of high levels of meat consumption. We are already living beyond our planetary means. Feeding a growing and more affluent global population of at least nine billion by 2050 simply isn\u2019t possible unless we make some changes.<\/p>\n<p>We need a \u201cless is better\u201d approach to meat eating. That\u2019s where World Meat Free Day can make a difference; by raising awareness of how simple, small changes can start to have a positive global influence. The\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmeatfreeday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Meat Free Day<\/a>\u00a0website has a\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmeatfreeday.com\/sustainability-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainability calculator<\/a>\u00a0that shows how meat-free meals can have an immediate impact on carbon emissions and water usage.<\/p>\n<p>If 10,000 people go meat free for just one day, they save:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The CO2 equivalent of driving a car 288,917 kilometres.<\/li>\n<li>Enough water for one person for 93 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just imagine the impact if your whole family, town or workplace did the same. Or, imagine if you kept up Meat Free Mondays for a whole year, or even ate no animal products every day! If you wish to continue eating meat, you can commit to eating less and use the money you save to choose better quality meat \u2013 produced to higher environmental and animal welfare standards. You can even visit our\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/grnpc.org\/IgNeQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Know Who Grew It challenge platform<\/a>\u00a0to make a commitment and challenge your friends.<\/p>\n<p>Every meal matters for the planet.
