Kannah \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PRESS RELEASE<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Kinshasa, 29 March 2021:<\/strong> Kinshasa\u2019s governor, Mr. Gentiny Ngobila, <a href=\"https:\/\/deskeco.com\/2021\/03\/26\/kinshasa-tout-vendeur-de-leau-en-sachet-sera-desormais-arrete-et-conduit-immediatement-au-parquet-g\">announced<\/a> new measures last Friday to prosecute all sale or production of single-use plastic water sachets in the capital city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Africa commends the adoption of strict measures to enforce a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/fr\/communiques-de-presse\/13013\/interdiction-des-emballages-plastiques-a-kinshasa-une-decision-de-plus-sans-mesures-daccompagnement\/\">ban on single-use plastic<\/a> on 21 January 2021.<\/p>\n\n<p>Patient Muamba, Greenpeace Africa campaigner in the Democratic Republic of Congo: \u201cSingle-use plastic is rapidly burying the streets of Kinshasa and poisoning its communities. Plastic waste is not just an aesthetic hazard: it makes floods worse and enters our food system.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Plastic bans have already been announced in at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/blogs\/11156\/34-plastic-bans-in-africa\/\">34 African countries<\/a>. The successful case of a plastic ban in Kenya shows that only when governments take strict action against large-scale producers and distributors of plastic, pollution levels go down drastically.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cProducers must be held accountable and Governor Gentiny Ngobila must ensure enforcement should target large-scale producers, rather than struggling street vendors,\u201d Muamba added.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Africa urges the government to enforce its plastic restrictions across all of DRC to ensure that its impact on the plastic crisis is widespread.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p
