{"id":1383,"date":"2018-05-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/uncategorized\/1383\/africans-want-the-continent-to-breakfree-from-fossil-fuels\/"},"modified":"2025-01-28T10:13:32","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T10:13:32","slug":"africans-want-the-continent-to-breakfree-from-fossil-fuels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/1383\/africans-want-the-continent-to-breakfree-from-fossil-fuels\/","title":{"rendered":"Africans want the continent to #BreakFree from fossil fuels"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"leader\">Johannesburg, South Africa \u2013 Today, Africa Day, citizens and communities in almost 20 countries across the African continent are gathering, taking to the streets and actively blocking the fossil fuel economy as part of a continent-wide day of action.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>By joining the Break Free movement, regular citizens and activists from communities across Africa will call on governments and business to put an end to fossil fuels and move towards a just transition to 100% renewable energy for all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There are over <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1c7VMYcEd0WPd8Bqaz7XM1J_gCYTssXzdACzbeYvlE1c\/edit#gid=0\">30 events registered<\/a>, in which those hardest hit by fossil fuels projects and the impacts of climate change will make their voices heard by those in power.<br \/>\nSome of these events include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">A picket in Lephalale where communities will call for the cancellation of the local proposed private coal-fired power station, Thabametsi;<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">A photo exhibition showcasing the work of anti-coal activists (Lamu);<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Representatives from coal mining affected communities will denounce the effects of coal mining (Abuja);<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">ACRP will update local decision makers on the realities of climate change and discuss their plans and progress towards shifting to 100% renewable energy (Johannesburg);<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Anti coal activists will be mobilising in Bargny, Ngadje beach to oppose the launch of the first coal power plant in (Senegal).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Break Free movement in Africa is coordinated by Greenpeace Africa, <a href=\"http:\/\/climatereality.co.za\/\">African Climate Reality Project (ACRP)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/350.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en-GB&amp;q=http:\/\/350.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1527318033759000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFFtRFleYDSE_FuadGcHXDVH41FxA\">350.org<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/earthlife.org.za\/\">Earthlife Africa Jhb<\/a>: empowering local communities to rise with acts of courage and come together as a global movement for climate action and justice.<\/p>\n<p>Content for documentation will be made available on the coordinating organisations\u2019 social media platforms, including soundbites from our Break Free podcasts and hi-res images of the local events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quotes:<\/strong><br class=\"m_-6858870405721108215gmail-m_-4267053197092570615gmail-m_-2794520527955790607gmail-kix-line-break\" \/>\u201cFunding fossil fuel development will only exacerbate the impacts of climate change.
