{"id":1467,"date":"2013-03-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/uncategorized\/1467\/powering-the-future\/"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:23:47","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:23:47","slug":"powering-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/blogs\/1467\/powering-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Powering The Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Renewable Energy Rollout in South Africa<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"leader\">\n\tOur latest report, released on the eve of the BRICS summit in Durban, busts prevailing myths around green energy and reaffirms why renewables are the best option for powering South Africa.\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2018\/10\/0b94f99e-0b94f99e-promoribbon.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"55\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"Download the Report\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2018\/10\/7e90c17f-7e90c17f-download_renewablesreport.jpg\" alt=\"Download the Report\" width=\"164\" height=\"280\"><\/p>\n<p>Shortsighted energy choices, guided by vested interests in coal and nuclear power, are preventing millions of South Africans from accessing electricity.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, misconceptions about what renewable energy can achieve and a lack of\u00a0political will power remain major stumbling blocks in clean energy rollout. <\/p>\n<p> Two years after world leaders <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/COP-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">met in Durban for the UN talks<\/a>,\u00a0which failed to deliver a plan for a clean energy future, the question is whether Brazil, Russia India, China and South Africa (BRICS)\u00a0can lead the way in\u00a0renewable\u00a0energy development.<\/p>\n<p>The ground-breaking report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2018\/10\/653a5477-653a5477-renewableenergyreport_poweringthefuture.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Powering the Future: Renewable Energy Roll-out in South Africa<\/a>, debunks important myths about renewable\u00a0energy generation; offers solutions to the barriers to its deployment; and presents success stories from across the globe. <br \/> According to Kumi Naidoo, International Executive Director for Greenpeace, \u201cSouth Africa\u2019s current energy planning is dangerously short-sighted, ignoring the vast external costs of both coal and nuclear power, and fails to provide electricity for millions of citizens\u201d.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cA roof-top revolution will speed up the uptake of\u00a0renewable\u00a0energy if local and national governments will agree to feed-in tariffs, net metering and other small scale\u00a0renewable\u00a0energy mechanisms,\u201d said Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaigner Ruth Mhlanga.<\/p>\n<p> The question is why the South African government continues to use public funds for coal power plants and centralized energy distribution, when\u00a0renewable\u00a0energy is cheaper, provides universal access, and creates thousands more jobs that the government\u2019s current energy plan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2018\/10\/3efddd74-3efddd74-twitterphoto.jpg\" title=\"mouse over for more information\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0px;\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.thinglink.me\/api\/image\/372675885414744064\/1024\/10\/scaletowidth#tl-372675885414744064;626328886\" width=\"600\" class=\"alwaysThinglink\"><script async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.thinglink.me\/jse\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe falling costs of\u00a0renewable\u00a0energy compared to the rising costs of fossil\u00a0fuels, such as coal, prove that the economics have already changed. These trends \u2013 highlighted in our report \u2013 show that the age of coal is over,\u201d added Mhlanga.<\/p>\n<p> South Africa can and should champion\u00a0a renewable\u00a0energy future, one in which\u00a0we see increased access to cheap electricity, thousands of new jobs\u00a0and the democratisation of energy production. An Energy [R]evolution\u00a0is possible if our leaders are willing to champion the cause.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cSouth Africa, the BRICS bloc, and the rest of the world can no longer afford\u00a0to wait \u2013 climate change is happening now.
