Yet, a significant portion of the world\u2019s population remains without. &nbsp;In the following article, Sidrah Ahmad, will explore why this is the case; the importance of access to water for all; as well as how water crises affect everyone \u2013 even those who once believed themselves to be immune from such a disaster.<\/div>\n<div>The article uncovers hard-hitting facts about what it means to go without water and sanitation. Plus, it digs into the recent water crisis in Cape Town. Some might believe it to have passed, but a stark reality remains; much of the world will suffer from a water crisis in the future.<\/div>\n<div>The article could change your assumptions about access to clean water; perhaps encouraging you to modify your lifestyle in the name of sustainability. To understand the scale of the situation, read on.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Clean drinking water is the most basic of human rights so why, in 2018, do<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/global\/wash_statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> 780 million people still lack access to a safe water source<\/a>? Why does one-third of the world\u2019s population remain<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/news\/releases\/2015\/jmp-report\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> without adequate sanitation<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>More people own a<a href=\"https:\/\/water.org\/our-impact\/water-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> mobile phone than have access to a toilet<\/a> \u2013 an uncomfortable reality reflecting the imbalance of the modern world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Importance of Clean Water<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Access to clean water is fundamental to a good quality of life. The World Health Organization recommends between<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/globalchange\/ecosystems\/water\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> 20-50 liters of water per person, per day<\/a>, to cover everything from drinking and cooking, to washing.<\/p>\n<p>Without a clean water source, populations suffer from poor sanitation, disease and premature death.<br \/>\nHowever, much of the world remains without, and the consequences are severe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23103920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&nbsp;800,000 children under the age of five die from diarrhea<\/a> on an annual basis<\/li>\n<li>88% of these deaths result from poor drinking water quality<\/li>\n<li>We could prevent 9% of all global disease, solely through improved water supplies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(15)61497-0\/fulltext?rss=yes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> women suffer more pronounced adverse effects<\/a>; they risk infection from fecal matter every time they collect water, as well as harassment during the process. Moreover, the lost time is in affects economic opportunities, which can result in a lack of financial independence. These are disparities we must work to correct.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdgmonitor.org\/mdg-7-ensure-environmental-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Millennium Development Goal<\/a> to \u201chalve the proportion of the universal population without sustainable access to clean and safe drinking water\u2026by 2015\u201d pushed the agenda; however, we still have far to go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The South African Water Crisis<\/strong><br \/>\nEven in economically developed regions, access to drinking water is no guarantee. Droughts in Cape Town led to the city coming within hours of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-safrica-drought\/cape-town-day-zero-pushed-back-to-2019-as-dams-fill-up-in-south-africa-idUSKCN1HA1LN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Day Zero<\/a>\u201d \u2013 the moment at which a city runs dry, taps are turned off, and citizens are to queue for their daily water allowance. Rains have brought temporary relief, but only until<a href=\"https:\/\/coct.co\/water-dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> August 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Water Crises Will Become More Regular<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Cape Town crisis runs deeper than drought: population growth \u2013 coupled with urbanization puts increasing strain on already overburdened municipal supplies. As cities become overdeveloped, the imbalance between supply and demand increases while inadequate infrastructure cannot support the new requirements. Unsurprisingly, this issue is not limited to Africa. The USA, South America, Australia, and Asia all face<a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2018\/02\/cape-town-running-out-of-water-drought-taps-shutoff-other-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> a threat of water shortages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water is a Human Right We Must Protect<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2015\/09\/6-reasons-why-we-need-clean-water-for-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Groundwater reserves are running dry<\/a>, while the glacial decline is a second invisible threat which may soon have a global impact.
