According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) copper and lead are harmful to human health. Exposure to small amounts of mercury has been shown to cause serious health problems on the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"\">nervous, digestive and immune systems, lungs and kidneys which may be fatal.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"leader\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"\">\u201cGreenpeace is calling upon the government of Kenya, the Kenya Bureau of Standards and businesses importing food to act with collective urgency\u00a0to protect millions of Kenyans from\u00a0consuming food that will have detrimental effects on their health.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"f\">It is critical that Kenya ensures that consumers have access to safe and healthy food.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"m_-4380712604647403510m_-4260063162060944486gmail-normal\"><span style=\"\"><span lang=\"EN\">The current situation exposes a failed food system in which government supports industrial agriculture over small scale farmers\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0who produce a bulk of the food consumed by Kenyans and constitute 30% of Kenya\u2019s farming population. Industrial Agriculture has disastrous consequences for the environment, for local farmers, consumers and the overall food system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-4380712604647403510m_-4260063162060944486gmail-normal\"><span lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"\">Greenpeace Africa calls on the government of Kenya to adopt a food\u00a0\u00a0system where all farmers and consumers benefit from the diversity of produce\u00a0\u00a0grown sustainability in a safe and healthy manner. Sustainability grown food is guaranteed through ecological farming \u2013 a farming practice which combines indigenous knowledge, modern science and innovation with respect for nature and biodiversity. It ensures healthy farming and healthy food. It protects the soil, water and the climate. It does not contaminate the environment with chemical inputs.
