{"id":1927,"date":"2016-11-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/uncategorized\/1927\/greenpeace-africa-welcomes-kenyas-stance-on-lamu-coal-power-plant\/"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:23:20","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:23:20","slug":"greenpeace-africa-welcomes-kenyas-stance-on-lamu-coal-power-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/1927\/greenpeace-africa-welcomes-kenyas-stance-on-lamu-coal-power-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Africa welcomes Kenya\u2019s stance on Lamu Coal Power Plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"leader\">Johannesburg,16 November 2016: Reacting to the Kenyan Energy Regulatory Authority\u2019s stern stance on withholding the License of Lamu Coal Power plant, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Executive Director, Njeri Kabeberi has said:<\/div>\n<div>\u201cKenya\u2019s Energy Regulatory Commission has taken the right and just decision to withhold the license of the proposed highly polluting Lamu coal fired power station. \u00a0This decision by the regulator has raised the importance of thorough Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) in ecologically sensitive regions like Lamu, and has set a clear precedence for fellow African countries.<span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f909396f-7674-dc37-297d-4fe29dfea221\">Greenpeace stands in solidarity with the Save Lamu Natural Justice movement in saying no to any new coal fired power stations. Over the years, Greenpeace has clearly documented the vastly negative impacts of coal-fired power stations on people\u2019s health, and the air and water quality of the surrounding areas in South Africa.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f909396f-7675-3981-8556-fcb2f143b74b\">\u201cWith the abundance of renewable energy potential, it is clear that Kenya should focus more on sustainable energy alternatives and stay away from polluting and carbon intense coal fired power stations,\u201d continued Kabeberi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of the fact that Kenya has signed the Paris Agreement, which commits to keep global temperatures to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, it is essential that their government continues to take crucial steps forward such as the decision to revoke the licence for the Lamu coal fired power station.
