{"id":1931,"date":"2016-05-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/uncategorized\/1931\/africas-forests-under-threat\/"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:23:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:23:36","slug":"africas-forests-under-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/publications\/1931\/africas-forests-under-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa&#8217;s forests under threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Socfin\u2019s plantations under threat in Cameroon and Liberia<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"leader\">On 23 February 2016, Greenpeace France published a report titled Africa\u2019s forests under threat: Investigation of the investments of the Bollor\u00e9 Group and its Belgian partner Hubert Fabri,1 which shed light on the threats that the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Financi\u00e8re des Caoutchoucs (Socfin) represents for African tropical forests by its refusal to commit to a zero deforestation policy.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Socfin is not well-known to the general public but has been operating in Africa for over a century.2 It is one of the leading oil palm and rubber tree plantation operators on the continent. Heading up Socfin\u2019s shareholdings are two figures of African business: Vincent Bollor\u00e9, France\u2019s ninth-richest person,3 and the Belgian businessman Hubert Fabri.
