Home to millions of people and a multitude of species, including chimpanzees, bonobos and other forest elephants, these tropical forests store several gigatons of carbon and thus preserve the global climate. (2) International donors have paid hundreds of millions of euros in public funds to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to protect this forest with its flora and fauna. Additional aid of one billion euros has just been signed, notably through the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) fund, to help prevent gas emissions greenhouse effect due to deforestation. (3) In the DRC, the moratorium on the granting of new forest concessions has kept deforestation at a relatively low level since its entry into force in 2002.

“The prime minister will make an official communication in relation to our meeting on Tuesday. The priority of the announcement will be made by the Prime Minister himself. But at least our request received assurances and great consideration from those who received us. We hope that their announcement will go in the direction of our request which is that of maintaining the moratorium and also, to work especially for the good governance of the forest sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo ”declared Mr. Serge Sabin Ngwato, Forest Campaigner at Greenpeace Africa.

Greenpeace Africa would also like to thank all the signatories of this petition from around the world and ask them to reiterate their commitment to the fight against the lifting of this moratorium to end this serious threat to the second largest rainforest in the world and its local communities who depend on it for their well-being.

END

Contact for interview
Raphael Mavambu,
Media and Communication, Greenpeace Africa,
