Following her visit to the Republic of Congo&#8217;s Conkouati-Douli National Park on 6 July, Greenpeace Africa calls on the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina Mohammed to denounce the government\u2019s decision to award an oil and gas exploration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/54875\/donors-deafening-silence-after-republic-of-congo\/\">permit<\/a> there last February.<\/p>\n\n<p>None of the social media around the photo-op or media &#8220;coverage&#8221; of it includes mention of the ecocidal permit.<\/p>\n\n<p>In a long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1235460501148984\">video<\/a> posted by Congo&#8217;s Forest Economy Minister Rosalie Matondo, who accompanied her with the Tourism Minister, Ms. Mohammed applauds the government&#8217;s conservation record.&nbsp; In the video, Ms. Matondo states that when the government vaunts its supposed green credentials, she has &#8220;the impression people don&#8217;t believe us.&#8221;&nbsp; She gloats : &#8220;What better ambassador could we hope for for our country?&nbsp; This visit is important in the eyes of the world.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ejsf1T245b0\">media<\/a> reported that Ms. Mohammed, who previously served as Nigeria\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2017\/11\/09\/new-allegations-challenge-the-environment-record-of-top-u-n-official\/\">controversial<\/a> Environment Minister, came away from the visit convinced that Congo is &#8220;avant-gardist about forest conservation.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocdh-congobrazza.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Note-consolidee-sur-Conkouati-VF-060624-.pdf\">thirteen Congolese human rights and environmental NGOs<\/a> called on donors to suspend conservation financing of Conkouati-Douli until the oil and gas permit is canceled.<\/p>\n\n<p>Conkouati-Douli is the country\u2019s most <a href=\"https:\/\/earth-insight.org\/insight\/oil-conkouati-douli\/\">biodiverse<\/a> protected area, and home to several thousand people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The permit was awarded only two months after Congo signed a $50 million forest protection deal with donors at COP28.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The government has failed to disclose the amount of the signature bonus the little-known firm &#8220;China Oil Natural Gas Overseas Holding United&#8221; was required to pay according to the terms of the 8 February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgg.cg\/JO\/2024\/congo-jo-2024-09.pdf\">award decree<\/a>, nor the identity of the firm&#8217;s shareholders.<\/p>\n\n<p>From 2 to 5 July the UN and Congo co-organized an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ciar-damar.org\/index.php\/en\/partenaires.php\">International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation<\/a>\u201d in Brazzaville, sponsored by multinational loggers and the carbon offsetting partner of TotalEnergies, <a href=\"https:\/\/afriquexxi.info\/Dans-le-bassin-du-Congo-la-Francafrique-fait-feu-de-tout-bois\">For\u00eat Resources Management<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n\n<p>Donor greenwashing continued on 12 July, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EnvDDBC_GouvCg\/status\/1812862544542859342\">EU ambassador<\/a> stating after a meeting with the Environment Minister that Congo &#8220;conserves well&#8221;
