{"id":57794,"date":"2025-06-12T14:26:56","date_gmt":"2025-06-12T14:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=57794"},"modified":"2025-06-12T14:38:57","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T14:38:57","slug":"shocking-mother-and-child-die-in-mayfair-west-fire-as-water-crisis-turns-deadly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/57794\/shocking-mother-and-child-die-in-mayfair-west-fire-as-water-crisis-turns-deadly\/","title":{"rendered":"SHOCKING: Mother and child die in Mayfair West fire as water crisis turns deadly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Johannesburg, South Africa<\/strong> &#8211; A devastating house fire in Mayfair West, Johannesburg, has claimed the lives of a mother and her child, and exposed the fatal consequences of South Africa\u2019s worsening water crisis.<\/p>\n\n<p>Emergency services were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2025-06-09-mayfair-west-tragedy-joburg-mother-and-child-die-in-fire-amid-water-shortages\/\">reportedly<\/a> unable to extinguish the blaze due to non-functioning fire hydrants and critically low water pressure, the result of ongoing water outages and collapsing infrastructure in the area.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t just a tragic fire, it was a systemic failure,\u201d<\/em> said Shumirai Zizhou, Responsive Campaigner at Greenpeace Africa. <em>\u201cLack of water is not just an inconvenience. It is a life-and-death issue.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>This is the second fatal fire in Mayfair West this year. In a similar incident months ago, four toddlers died when emergency response teams were again hampered by lack of water.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Africa warns that these deaths are not isolated events, but a warning sign of a countrywide disaster. Millions across South Africa are living with intermittent water supply, broken sewage systems, and polluted rivers, a direct violation of their constitutional right to clean water and a safe environment.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe are in the middle of a preventable disaster,\u201d<\/em> Zizhou said. <em>\u201cEvery delay in fixing our water systems risks more lives lost.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Africa is urgently calling for:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Immediate investment in repairing water infrastructure and ensuring fire hydrants are operational<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guaranteed access to clean, pressurised water for all communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accountability for systemic failures at all levels of government<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protection of rivers and catchment areas from pollution and mismanagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><em>\u201cThese lives should never have been lost,\u201d <\/em>Zizhou added. <em>\u201cWater is a lifeline, not a luxury.
