{"id":59476,"date":"2025-11-04T12:30:55","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T12:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=59476"},"modified":"2025-11-07T12:25:59","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T12:25:59","slug":"closure-of-the-2nd-congo-basin-csos-conference-the-kinshasa-declaration-establishes-a-regional-front-for-climate-justice-and-forest-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/59476\/closure-of-the-2nd-congo-basin-csos-conference-the-kinshasa-declaration-establishes-a-regional-front-for-climate-justice-and-forest-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"Closure of the 2nd Congo Basin CSOs Conference: the Kinshasa Declaration establishes a regional front for climate justice and forest protection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Kinshasa, 4 November 2025<\/strong> \u2013 The second edition of the <strong>Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Conference of the Congo Basin<\/strong> concluded on 31 October in Kinshasa on a note of unity and commitment, with the solemn adoption of the <strong>Kinshasa Declaration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>This landmark document paves the way for <strong>just, inclusive, and transparent climate governance<\/strong> for the future of the Congo Basin.<\/p>\n\n<p>The event brought together <strong>over 30 representatives<\/strong> from civil society organisations, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, traditional authorities, experts, and public institutions from five Congo Basin countries (DRC, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, and Central African Republic).<br>Together, participants strengthened regional cooperation and voiced a unified call ahead of <strong>COP30<\/strong>, to be held in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>A collective call for genuine climate justice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Held under the theme <strong>\u201cFrom Dialogue to Action: Building a United Regional Front for the Climate, Forests, and Peoples of the Congo Basin,\u201d<\/strong> this edition gave renewed momentum to the efforts initiated during the <strong>2024 Yaound\u00e9 Conference<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Participants raised an alarming assessment: rampant deforestation, persistent inequalities in access to climate finance, marginalization of Indigenous Peoples, and the proliferation of extractive models that threaten ecosystems and livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n<p>In response, the <strong>Kinshasa Declaration<\/strong> calls on governments, donors, and international institutions to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>End deforestation and unsustainable extractive practices;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote <strong>rights-based conservation<\/strong> centered on Indigenous Peoples and local communities;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure <strong>equitable sharing of benefits<\/strong> derived from natural resources;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guarantee <strong>direct, transparent, and fair access to climate finance<\/strong>;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urge <strong>Global North countries<\/strong> to recognize and honor their <strong>climate debt<\/strong> through sufficient and unconditional financial support.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>A decisive turning point ahead of COP30<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Adopted just weeks before <strong>COP30<\/strong>, the <strong>Kinshasa Declaration<\/strong> stands as a <strong>shared roadmap through 2030<\/strong>. It reflects the determination of Congo Basin stakeholders to transform the region into a <strong>hub of action, leadership, and climate solutions<\/strong> on the global stage.<\/p>\n\n<p>As a key partner and facilitator of the conference, <strong>Greenpeace Africa<\/strong> hailed the historic significance of the declaration.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis declaration embodies the determination of the Congo Basin to stand as a force for action and influence in global climate governance. Indigenous Peoples and local communities are the true guardians of these forests and must be recognized as such,\u201d<\/em><em><br><\/em> said <strong>Bonaventure Bondo<\/strong>, Forest Campaigner at Greenpeace Africa.<\/p>\n\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cAs COP30 approaches, the world must hear the voice of the Congo Basin.
