The wait is over. Yesterday, our environmental movement across Africa got a little bigger. We are proud to announce that Greenpeace Africa has officially opened its doors in Port Louis, Mauritius.<\/strong> Our Executive Director, Dr. Oulie Keita, led the launch event, alongside key government leaders, including the Junior Minister of the Environment, Solid Waste Management, and Climate Change in Mauritius, Mrs. Joanna Marie B\u00e9renger. We are excited to begin this new chapter. This is a historic milestone that marks our organisation\u2019s first physical presence in an island nation in Africa.<\/p>\n\n

\n This day is a significant milestone. Opening an office in Mauritius represents a commitment that Greenpeace Africa is making to the Indian Ocean, to island nations, and to the millions of Africans whose livelihoods depend on healthy marine ecosystems.\n <\/div>\n\n

Mauritius is an island that is as beautiful as it is vulnerable to climate change, and it is situated right at the heart of the Indian Ocean, the second most polluted ocean in the world. From rising seas to pollution (particularly from plastic), these threats pose a direct risk to Mauritian fishers, families, and youth who depend on it. We are here to join the people on the frontlines to protect what matters. <\/p>\n\n

With the High Seas Treaty just days away from entering into force, our arrival in Port Louis could not be more timely. Being based in Mauritius gives us a front-row seat to ensure that these global promises become real action <\/strong>in the Indian Ocean. We believe that the power to protect our oceans belongs to the people who have lived in harmony with the ocean for generations. That\u2019s why we are partnering with Mauritians to ensure that their voices are heard loud and clear on the global stage. Together, we will defend our ocean from industrial greed and protect and ensure it is preserved for present and future generations. \u200b<\/p>\n\n
