{"id":6375,"date":"2019-02-07T18:14:16","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T18:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=6375"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:22:09","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:22:09","slug":"ramaphosa-takes-big-step-in-the-right-direction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/6375\/ramaphosa-takes-big-step-in-the-right-direction\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa takes big step in the right direction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johannesburg, 7 February 2019 &#8212; In response to the President\u2019s State of the Nation Address, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Political Advisor, Happy Khambule, has said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Greenpeace Africa welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa&#8217;s announcement at SONA that Eskom\u2019s current death spiral is being taken seriously. Recognising the difficulty and complexity of the situation brought on by Eskom&#8217;s years of decline, the President has displayed leadership and a commitment to change in the direction of renewable energy, which is something to be celebrated. Removing Eskom\u2019s monopoly and unbundling the utility is a step in the right direction, but still doesn\u2019t go far enough to solve its almost complete reliance on coal, which is driving up the price of electricity, and devastating communities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is good news that the President recognises that the utility\u2019s business model must shift towards renewable energy in order to recover from its current crisis, and that Eskom\u2019s reform must be accompanied by a Just Transition program.
