{"id":6515,"date":"2019-03-12T14:28:36","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T14:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=6515"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:22:06","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:22:06","slug":"greenpeace-africa-calls-on-drc-president-to-cancel-oil-contract-in-salonga-national-park-and-central-cuvette-peatlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/6515\/greenpeace-africa-calls-on-drc-president-to-cancel-oil-contract-in-salonga-national-park-and-central-cuvette-peatlands\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Africa calls on DRC president to cancel Oil Contract in Salonga National Park and Central Cuvette peatlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Following the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-02-26\/congo-approves-oil-deal-that-may-encroach-on-world-heritage-site\"><b>Bloomberg<\/b><\/a><b> revelation that former DRC president Joseph Kabila signed a presidential order validating an oil deal that would allow drilling in Salonga National Park as well as in the Central Cuvette peatlands, Greenpeace Africa said:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGreenpeace Africa calls on DRC&#8217;s new President Felix Tshisekedi to immediately cancel all of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DIG Oil and CoMiCo\u2019s oil blocks, to guarantee the present boundaries of Salonga and Virunga, and to put an end to the rampant corruption in the management of DRC\u2019s natural resources. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 13 December 2018, just before he stepped down, former DRC president, Joseph Kabila signed a ordnance on the production sharing agreement with opaque South African firm DIG Oil which includes an oil block overlapping with Salonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although oil prospecting and drilling is banned in the Democratic Republic of Congo&#8217;s protected areas, Kabila\u2019s government sought last year to redraw the boundaries of both Salonga and Virunga parks to accommodate oil multinationals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe redrawing of the boundaries has not yet happened and Greenpeace Africa demands the DRC\u2019s new President Felix Tshisekedi to stop it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year ago, Kabila approved another production sharing agreement with Guernsey-registered Compagnie Mini\u00e8re Congolaise SPRL (CoMiCo) which also overlaps with Salonga, and which a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/campaigns\/oil-gas-and-mining\/null-and-void-comicos-oil-aspirations-in-drc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Witness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> legal analysis suggests may be illegal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis ordinance violates the Congo\u2019s legislations related to environmental protection and nature conservation, banning all industrial activity in national parks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil drilling in the area would threaten local livelihoods and biodiversity, and undermine international<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effort to keep global warming below 1.5 \u00b0C.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost 2 million hectares, an area the size of Slovenia, of DIG&#8217;s DRC oil blocks overlap with the largest tropical peatland complex in the world, \u00a0estimated to contain 30 billion tons of carbon &#8211; the equivalent of nearly 20 years of the fossil fuel emissions of the United States.
