Eskom is applying for wide-ranging postponements and suspensions from South Africa\u2019s Minimum Emission Standards (MES) that would allow it to operate its entire existing fleet without even rudimentary controls for three of the most dangerous pollutants emitted from coal-fired power plants: SO2, NOx, and mercury.<\/p>\n

As Eskom\u2019s coal-fired power plants are among the largest sources of air pollutant emissions in South Africa and globally, the air quality and health impacts of failing to comply with the emission standards are potentially very significant.<\/p>\n
