{"id":6731,"date":"2019-03-29T11:58:34","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T11:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=6731"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:22:03","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:22:03","slug":"proposed-crop-bill-puts-profit-over-farmers-and-the-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/6731\/proposed-crop-bill-puts-profit-over-farmers-and-the-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed Crop Bill Puts Profit Over Farmers and the Environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Nairobi, 29 March 2019<\/strong> &#8211; Responding to the news that it will be illegal to plant crops using animal manure if a proposed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/news\/Bill-to-criminalise-use-of-animal-manure\/1056-5044422-13rstvh\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crop bill <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becomes law, \u00a0Renee Olende, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior Food for Life Campaign Manager has said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis bill is cruel and a reflection of misdirected governance. Kenyan citizens will be denied the right to chemically free food and worse still farmers will be locked into a debt cycle dependent on industrial corporations that provide agro chemical fertilizers. This will guarantee Kenyans food which is laced with chemicals for generations to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIndustrial agriculture corporations are set to win big with this bill that will guarantee bottom line profits. \u00a0Poor governance is yet again on display where the government of Kenya places profits over people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGreenpeace Africa is calling on the ministry of Agriculture, the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) and county governments to prioritise implementation of robust inspection systems to ensure that organic manure is safe for use as opposed to promoting chemical inputs which pose an even higher risk to both the environment and human health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe government of Kenya must ensure that the Agriculture sector is self reliant on sustainable practises that allow for climate change adaptation measures, efficient post harvesting handling \u00a0and food sovereignty.
