{"id":6947,"date":"2019-04-30T10:09:16","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T10:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=6947"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:21:58","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:21:58","slug":"greenpeace-africa-volunteers-handover-plastic-ban-petition-to-top-political-parties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/6947\/greenpeace-africa-volunteers-handover-plastic-ban-petition-to-top-political-parties\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Africa volunteers handover Plastic Ban petition to top political parties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27 April 2019, South Africa &#8211; Greenpeace Africa volunteers from across South Africa visited the head offices of each of South Africa&#8217;s top political parties to deliver a petition calling for a ban on single-use plastic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The petition, started earlier this year, called for the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Democratic Alliance (DA) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) to prioritise a plastic ban in the parliament following this year&#8217;s election. To date, the petition has garnered close to 11,000 signatures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elaine Mills, the Cape Town-based volunteer who started the campaign on Greenpeace Africa&#8217;s open campaigning platform <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VUMA.EARTH<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said in her address to the ruling party: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The equivalent of one rubbish truck of plastic is going into our oceans every minute. By 2050, we will have more plastic in the ocean, by weight, than fish. South Africans use 8 billion packet carrier bags per year, which is totally unnecessary. I think we all know what the right thing is to do. What we need is those vested with power to legislate against single-use plastic.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6948\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/679407b8-picture222-300x226.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"877\" height=\"661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/679407b8-picture222-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/679407b8-picture222-768x578.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/679407b8-picture222-452x340.png 452w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/679407b8-picture222.png 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte accepted the petition, saying that negating the harmful impact of plastic on the environment was a priority for the party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Plastics are like the new flowers, it&#8217;s very untidy and absolutely the wrong thing to have in our lives. We look forward to working with [Greenpeace Africa] quite closely on the way forward and finding a solution that will work for all of us,&#8221; Duarte said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EFF National Legal Head Kwena Manamela accepted the petition on behalf of the party. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The EFF has dedicated this year to health &#8211; and health is not only restricted to physical health but it is also go beyond that and include the health of the environment. I cannot make the commitment to include it in our manifesto, since I do not have those powers. However, the EFF is committed to a healthy environment and a healthy lifestyle.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/219a9b98-picture223-300x226.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"877\" height=\"661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/219a9b98-picture223-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/219a9b98-picture223-768x578.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/219a9b98-picture223-452x340.png 452w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2019\/04\/219a9b98-picture223.png 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IFP, who have already included a plastic ban in their election manifesto, reiterated their commitment to advancing calls for better environmental protection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their chief whip and environment spokesperson Narend Singh MP said: &#8220;I&#8217;d like to thank Greenpeace Africa for all the wonderful work they are doing to protect this environment. It is the only one that we have, and future generations must be able to enjoy it.
