The plan seeks to establish 50 new large-scale farms of 2,500 acres or more, in a plan aimed at unlocking up to 500,000 acres of new farm production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Responding to this new development, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Senior Food Campaign Manager Renee Olende has said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis plan seeks to put\u00a0power in the hands of a few corporates in\u00a0the private sector and impoverish the\u00a0very person that feeds the nation \u2013 the smallholder farmer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe most urgent measure the government needs to take is to ensure that the country is food secure by leveraging Kenya agriculture potential, which calls for measures that are fundamentally home-grown, scalable and practical.\u00a0Food security can only be achieved when smallholders farmers are a top priority in the government\u2019s plan and citizens\u2019 food sovereignty is safe guarded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Government&#8217;s proposed approach favours a limited pool of privately run projects, these investments must be channeled at community level. Kenya\u2019s government must ensure that the agriculture sector is self reliant by supporting\u00a0\u00a0sustainable practises that allow for climate change adaptation measures and efficient post harvesting handling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSmallholder farmers are key to the success of the agriculture sector and the upscaling of climate change adaptation measures through ecological agriculture approaches.
