{"id":7155,"date":"2019-06-07T09:56:36","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T09:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=7155"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:21:53","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:21:53","slug":"bold-steps-towards-a-total-ban-on-single-use-plastics-greenpeace-call-for-effective-enforcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/7155\/bold-steps-towards-a-total-ban-on-single-use-plastics-greenpeace-call-for-effective-enforcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Bold Steps Towards a Total Ban on Single Use Plastics, Greenpeace Call for Effective Enforcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nairobi 7 June 2019 &#8211; Responding to president Uhuru Kenyatta\u2019s pronouncement to ban single-use plastic products including plastic bottles and straws in all protected areas effective June 5 \u00a02020, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Senior political Advisor Frederick Njehu has said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith this ban Kenya will be a step closer to fulfilling its commitment to the United Nations Environment Clean Seas Campaign, which seeks to counter the consequences of plastic \u00a0pollution in the seas and oceans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHalf of all plastics wastage emanates from plastic packaging, and much of it is thrown away within just a few minutes of its first use. When discarded in landfills or in the environment, plastic can take up to a thousand years to decompose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cResearch shows that \u00a094% of the plastic that enters the ocean ends up on the seafloor; Barely 1% of marine plastics are found floating at or near the ocean surface; and that 5% ends up on beaches. Greenpeace Africa is calling on the president to issue a total ban on all single use plastics in all areas to curb the plastic crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGreenpeace Africa calls on the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to come up with stringent measures to ensure that there is 100% \u00a0enforcement come June 2020.
