A call for tender closing today could result in the handout of five more oil blocks, including nearly 18,000 km\u00b2 of peatland [1].<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-890322347678311245m_6448327059500271434gmail-m_-4762113435054401023gmail-normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cPeatlands are one of the world\u2019s most carbon-rich ecosystems. Degrading them would result in massive CO\u2082 emissions. The handout of these oil blocks amounts to a declaration of war on the planet by the government of The Republic of Congo and the oil industry,\u201d said Dr. Victorine Che Thoener, project leader for Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Congo Basin forest campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-890322347678311245m_6448327059500271434gmail-m_-4762113435054401023gmail-normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">In 2017, University of Leeds researchers mapped the Cuvette Centrale peatlands straddling the two Congos and found that they constitute the world\u2019s largest tropical peatland complex, covering 145,500 km\u00b2 and containing 30.6 billion tons of carbon, equivalent to more than three years of global CO\u2082 emissions [2].<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-890322347678311245m_6448327059500271434gmail-m_-4762113435054401023gmail-normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOil exploration in the rainforest causes deforestation, toxic contamination, violence and corruption, and aggravates the global climate crisis,\u201d adds Dr. Che Thoener. \u201cDrilling into this carbon bomb in Congo\u2019s peatlands would be madness. Oil multinationals must respect the science and stay out of the peatlands.\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-890322347678311245m_6448327059500271434gmail-m_-4762113435054401023gmail-normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">While the bidders participating in the call for tenders closing today are still unknown, five Cuvette Centrale oil blocks have already been held for several years by four companies, including oil and gas giants Total and Eni.
