Greenpeace Africa <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/media.greenpeace.org\/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult_VPage&amp;STID=27MZIFJJUBL0K\"><b>documented<\/b><\/a><b> large scale fraudulent logging of mukula timber in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in August 2016. Today, the protected status of the mukula tree by <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cites.org\/eng\/CITES_conference_responds_to_extinction_crisis_by_strengthening_international_trade_regime_for_wildlife_28082019\"><b>CITES<\/b><\/a><b> [1] sends hope for the Miombo woodlands.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter the mukula tree, there are numerous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.de\/sites\/www.greenpeace.de\/files\/publications\/trading-in-chaos-20150709.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endangered animals and plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waiting in line for protected status,\u201d said Dr. Raoul Monsembula, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional Coordinator for Central Africa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPresident Tshisekedi\u2019s new government has the opportunity and responsibility to enforce national protection of our natural treasures,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the eve of the CITES decision the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) released a devastating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eia-global.org\/reports\/20190815-scheduled-extinction-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealing that since Tshisekedi became president, illegal Congolese mukula is again transiting through Zambia: \u201cThe dormant trafficking networks suddenly awakened; less than a week after the first container of mukula from DRC crossed the border to Zambia in April 2019, EIA sources observed the nightly loading of a clandestine convoy guarded by individuals with Congolese army uniforms\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mukula is a rare, slow-growing timber species endemic to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Miombo Woodlands, a unique ecosystem of scrub and savanna south of the Congo Basin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is known to play an important role for a variety of species including bees, primates, elephants, and rodents; it is also vital to soil preservation and other ecosystem services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Annex II listing of mukula by CITES is positive, maximum vigilance is necessary, given DRC&#8217;s track record. In 2014 the CITES Secretariat notified Parties of the existence of a \u201clarge number of fake or falsified [export] permits&#8221; for Annex II-listed Afrormosia &#8220;apparently issued by the Democratic Republic of the Congo.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massive corruption and high demand in the Chinese furniture industry are driving illegal mukula logging in southern DRC and Zambia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor over a month in 2016, Greenpeace Africa documented mukula logging operations. In 2017-2018, an exhibition entitled \u2018Blood Wood\u2019 was held at Shanghai\u2019s Beaugeste Gallery.
