{"id":7815,"date":"2019-09-05T11:26:54","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T11:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=7815"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:21:40","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:21:40","slug":"greenpeace-responds-to-eskoms-claims-of-loadshedding-if-it-complies-with-air-quality-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/7815\/greenpeace-responds-to-eskoms-claims-of-loadshedding-if-it-complies-with-air-quality-legislation\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace responds to Eskom\u2019s claims of loadshedding if it complies with air quality legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Johannesburg, 5 September, 2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; Responding to statements made to the media by Eskom\u2019s Chief Operating Officer, Jan Oberholzer, where he warned that blackouts might be an outcome of complying with air quality legislation, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Senior Climate and Energy Campaign Manager, Melita Steele has said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEskom\u2019s Chief Operating Officer is in one breath admitting that the utility is not doing what it needs to do to meet weak air quality standards and protect human life, and in the next, blackmailing us all with more loadshedding should Eskom actually take steps to comply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This choice is a false one. We cannot be given a so-called choice between loadshedding or toxic air and impending death when clean energy options exist, are the cheapest source of electricity, and are ready to go.
