{"id":8242,"date":"2019-11-05T12:54:35","date_gmt":"2019-11-05T12:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=8242"},"modified":"2019-11-06T08:21:33","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:21:33","slug":"greenpeace-africa-on-floods-across-the-continent-without-climate-action-well-be-queuing-for-noahs-ark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/8242\/greenpeace-africa-on-floods-across-the-continent-without-climate-action-well-be-queuing-for-noahs-ark\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Africa on floods across the continent:  \u201cWithout Climate Action we\u2019ll be queuing for Noah\u2019s Ark\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Nairobi, 5 November 2019 &#8211; <\/b>With floods hitting at least 16 African countries [1], Greenpeace Africa urges leaders to act for the people and against climate change.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rains have increasingly been torrential in the past months, striking large parts of East Africa and elsewhere, in unprecedented intensity in decades, causing at least dozens of deaths, displacement of more than one million people [2].<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Greenpeace Africa calls on Africa\u2019s leaders to provide immediate aid to those affected, but also take action to tackle the climate crisis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom floods to drought, extreme weather is a direct consequence of bad energy policies, the senseless burning of fossil fuels and reckless destruction of our forests,\u201d said Amos Wemanya, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Campaigner. \u201cThis continent must not wait for a miracle to avoid the next flood. Without breaking away from coal, protecting our rainforests and oceans, transforming our farming and agriculture, and without bringing the US back to the Paris Agreement, we will all end up queuing for Noah\u2019s Ark,\u201d concluded Wemanya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more extreme weather upon us, Greenpeace Africa will continue to stand with youth striking for the climate.
