{"id":9171,"date":"2020-03-24T10:39:18","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T10:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=9171"},"modified":"2021-12-01T12:44:38","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:44:38","slug":"amid-the-covid-19-pandemic-coordinated-efforts-needed-to-continue-the-fight-against-locusts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/9171\/amid-the-covid-19-pandemic-coordinated-efforts-needed-to-continue-the-fight-against-locusts\/","title":{"rendered":"Amid the Covid-19 Pandemic: Coordinated Efforts Needed to Continue the Fight Against Locusts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nairobi, 24 March 2020 &#8211;&nbsp; Responding to reports that Kenya\u2019s government has abandoned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/counties\/embu\/Locusts-still-a-menace-Embu-MCAs\/3370188-5500150-t3h8ck\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fight against locusts<\/a> which are still ravaging many parts of the country, Greenpeace Africa\u2019s Food Campaigner, Claire Nasike has said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the government is putting a lot of effort into dealing with the COVID- 19 crisis, it must not abandon the war against locusts. Deprioritising the fight against locust invasion will put Kenyans at a greater risk of suffering another shock in the coming months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe locust invasion poses a great threat to food security in the country. The new swarms of locusts are now ravaging the highland areas which are Kenya\u2019s breadbasket. The Ministry of Agriculture needs to move with speed to contain the current invasion to curb food shortage which could result in more suffering. There is a need to get rid of the eggs laid by the locusts before they start hatching into new swarms.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe COVID -19 pandemic has presented a challenge to many systems in Kenya.&nbsp; And more than never before, there\u2019s a need for Kenya\u2019s government to coordinate and ensure that different Ministries deal with different challenges facing the country right now.
