Seabed mining is the destructive practice of stripping the ocean\u2019s seabed for metals and minerals. Mining companies want to extract these metals by <strong>using gigantic machines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Seabed mining would be <strong>extremely destructive<\/strong>, destroying beautiful habitats and ecosystems that aren\u2019t yet fully understood. It would cause <strong>massive damage to the ecosystems<\/strong> which sustain life all the way up the food chain, that all of us rely on.<\/p>\n\n<p>Trans-Tasman Resources is planning to suck up <strong>50 million tonnes of iron sand <\/strong>from the South Taranaki Bight<strong> every year for 35 years<\/strong> to extract vanadium, iron and titanium. Trans-Tasman Resources will then dump <strong>45 million tonnes a year<\/strong> back into the ocean.<\/p>\n\n<p>Trans-Tasman Resources was also given the go-ahead to nearly <strong>quadruple<\/strong> the size of the area it wants to mine in the South Taranaki Bight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-slams-govt-decision-to-expand-seabed-mining-permit-area\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-slams-govt-decision-to-expand-seabed-mining-permit-area\/\">from 6600 to 24,300 hectares<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/12\/27ee2369-dsc00005_v2-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Waves crash against shore in the South Taranaki Bight.\" class=\"wp-image-67878\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">South Taranaki Bight, where Trans-Tasman Resources wants to carry out seabed mining. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-does-trans-tasman-resources-want-to-mine\">Where does Trans-Tasman Resources want to mine?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Trans-Tasman Resources wants mine the shallow waters between 22km and 36km off the coastal town of P\u0101tea in South Taranaki. TTR originally applied to mine 66 square kilometres. But in July 2024, the industry regulator <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2024\/09\/03\/seabed-mining-permit-area-nearly-quadruples\/\">quietly approved<\/a> TTR\u2019s application to increase the size of its mining permit from 66 square kilometres to <strong>243 <\/strong>square kilometres! That&#8217;s nearly the size of Great Barrier Island!<\/p>\n\n<p>The South Taranaki Bight is home to some beautiful and rare marine wildlife, including <strong>eight at-risk mammal species<\/strong> like the pygmy blue whale and critically endangered M\u0101ui dolphin. Below are just some of the risks seabed mining would pose:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Noise pollution <\/strong>&#8211; Seabed mining is a very noisy process. Scientists are concerned that the noise from the seabed mining machines would harm mammals like whales. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/3-whales-potentially-at-risk-from-deep-sea-mining-in-the-arctic\/\">Many marine mammals rely on sound<\/a> to communicate, navigate and forage. Studies have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rsos.140484\">noise pollution can disrupt this behaviour<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Destruction of habitat<\/strong>s &#8211; When scooping up sand, seabed mining would hurt habitats and creatures on the seabed, like coral, anemones and octopus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sediment plumes<\/strong> &#8211; Seabed mining would also create massive plumes of sand when it is disposed of. These sand plumes would clog corals and sponges and likely smother the animals and ecosystems on its path.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blocking green investment <\/strong>&#8211; The South Taranaki Bight was set to be the site of an offshore wind farm. This project has now been cancelled, as it&#8217;s incompatible with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/seabed-mining-sinks-offshore-wind-industry\/\">Trans-Tasman Resource&#8217;s seabed mining plans<\/a>.  Instead of investing in renewable energy, Luxon&#8217;s government is set to invest in a destructive extraction industry. &#8220;It\u2019s straight-out climate denial,\u201d says Juressa Lee, Greenpeace&#8217;s seabed mining campaigner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The scariest thing is we don&#8217;t yet know the full consequences that seabed mining would have. They are also the <strong>sole owners of Trans-Tasman Resources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Manuka Resources recently had to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/seabed-miner-trans-tasman-resources-retracts-claim-it-will-earn-1-billion-a-year\/R5LDZYLHOBDQDA3XL3DFKZ3FRE\/\">backtrack on claims<\/a>&nbsp;that the proposed Taranaki project would contribute a billion dollars a year to New Zealand\u2019s exports. This included a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manukaresources.com.au\/site\/pdf\/b0fb90a1-37d3-4a27-8d9e-ef2d9335ea20\/Retraction-and-Clarification-Statement.pdf\">formal retraction to the Australian Stock Exchange<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-straterra\">What is Straterra?<\/h3>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/what-is-straterra\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/what-is-straterra\/\">Straterra<\/a> is a group that represents the mining industry in New Zealand. Its members include mining companies and well-known organisations such as Deloitte and Beca. Straterra runs campaigns to <strong>persuade the public about mining<\/strong> and <strong>tries to influence the government<\/strong> to help miners.<\/p>\n\n<p>Straterra lobbies on behalf of wannabe seabed miners Trans-Tasman Resources. This is despite&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/seabed-miner-quitting-epa-hearing-highlights-danger-of-luxons-fast-track\/\">TTR losing&nbsp;<\/a>in court several times and facing strong opposition from local iwi and h\u0101pu, environmentalists, boaties, and the fishing industry.<\/p>\n\n<p>It has openly backed the Luxon government\u2019s Fast Track Approvals Bill.
