We used special underwater cameras to survey the seafloor, including in intensively trawled areas in the Tasman Sea, off the west coast of New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We captured images of the life that lives there for our onboard science team to start identifying them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-go-on-a-seamount-expedition\"><strong>Why go on a seamount expedition?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to shine a light on what\u2019s in the dark. Seamounts are vital to ocean health. But so few seamounts have been studied, meaning really we don\u2019t know much about these ecosystems and what\u2019s found on them.<br><br>That\u2019s why we\u2019re doing this research. This will pave the way for the creation of vast ocean sanctuaries on the high seas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action.greenpeace.org.nz\/petition\/oceans-create-new-global-ocean-sanctuaries?utm_source=web&amp;utm_medium=campaign-oceans&amp;utm_campaign=Oceans\">Creating global ocean sanctuaries on the high seas<\/a> will help protect all the life that lives in these abundant waters. One site we were especially interested in is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/coral-pulled-up-by-nz-trawler-environmental-vandalism\/\">where the <em>Tasman Viking<\/em>, a Westfleet trawler, pulled up 37kg of coral last year.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our aim was to survey the site to assess the damage.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-nbsp-seamounts-important\"><strong><strong>Why are&nbsp;seamounts important?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that seamounts and underwater hills, knolls and ridges are ocean lifelines, providing homes to coral and sponges, breeding grounds for fish and feeding spots for migrating whales.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/what-are-seamounts-and-why-do-they-matter-to-the-ocean\/\">Seamounts<\/a> are sometimes called oasis of the ocean because of all the life they support. New Zealand is the only country still trawling in the South Pacific high seas &#8211; including in the Tasman Sea.<br><br>When trawlers drag their heavy, weighted nets over these areas, they bulldoze precious coral that has taken decades or centuries to grow.The coral that comes up in nets is just the tip of the iceberg. Scientists warn that the actual damage on the seafloor could be a <strong>hundred times worse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
