Notoriously opaque, Talley&#8217;s is the New Zealand company involved in fishing, as well as producing frozen vegetables, chips, and dairy products.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Unfortunately, Talley\u2019s has a far from ideal reputation when it comes to protecting the environment they profit off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Not only do they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/what-is-bottom-trawling-and-why-is-it-bad-for-the-environment\/#:~:text=Bottom%20trawling%20is%20a%20method,of%20product%20in%20one%20go.\">bottom trawl<\/a> &#8211; a highly destructive fishing technique that decimates marine ecosystems &#8211; their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/environment\/119627195\/government-officials-accused-of-lobbying-for-fishing-company-it-is-prosecuting\">staff led lobbying efforts to promote less protection from bottom trawling<\/a> in the South Pacific this year. Not to mention that their subsidiary company Amaltal have been in trouble for allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/business\/381302\/talley-s-accused-of-illegal-trawling-in-protected-tasman-sea-area\">illegally bottom trawling in a marine protected area<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<p>In November 2020, Talley&#8217;s was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/business\/430289\/amaltal-guilty-of-taking-fish-from-a-marine-reserve\">found guilty of bottom trawling in a protected area off Kaikoura<\/a>. That&#8217;s despite dogged attempts from Talley&#8217;s to scapegoat the skipper, claiming he was responsible for fishing in the restricted area and not the company.<\/p>\n\n<p>Back on land Talley\u2019s manufactures milk powders through subsidiary Open Country Dairy, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsroom.co.nz\/2020\/06\/03\/1213439\/recidivist-dairy-company-seeks-river-discharge-consent\">they\u2019ve recently pushed for permission to double the amount of wastewater they excrete<\/a> into the already polluted Waitoa river. This is the same river they received a record fine dumping noxious discharge into last year; it\u2019s the fifth time they\u2019ve been caught breaking this consent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>At a certain point, a series of events becomes a pattern. It isn\u2019t just that Talley\u2019s is a passive participant in polluting industries, this is a company that actively pursues the expansion of its environmentally destructive practices for more profit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Talley\u2019s is also infamous in employment courts &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbr.co.nz\/analysis\/chance-change-talley-s\"> with a litany of historical litigation brought against the company from employees and unions<\/a>. Issues range from health and safety lapses, to unfair dismissals, to union claims over treatment of employees. The company can afford to fight these legal battles; their employees arguably less so.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The company trades not only in produce, but also in political influence. In the lead up to the 2017 election, Talley\u2019s were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbr.co.nz\/analysis\/chance-change-talley-s\">second biggest donors to election campaigns<\/a>. They were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/in-depth\/410299\/concerns-over-secret-fisheries-donations-to-nz-first-foundation\">also named in the latest round of New Zealand First Foundation scandals<\/a>, as it was revealed earlier this year that the managing director and company made donations totalling tens of thousands of dollars to the Foundation. The New Zealand First Foundation is now under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>There are a lot of incredible food producers in New Zealand; producers who genuinely put people and the planet at the heart of what they do.
