{"id":13897,"date":"2020-06-19T07:25:55","date_gmt":"2020-06-18T19:25:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/?p=13897"},"modified":"2025-06-25T01:43:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T13:43:40","slug":"dead-albatross-may-save-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/dead-albatross-may-save-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Dead albatross may save us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, on World Albatross Day, Greenpeace has released <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/eOwC4luBzGo\">a heart wrenching video<\/a> detailing the last days of a Toroa (Southern Royal Albatross) &#8211; which died after eating an entire plastic drink bottle.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cPlastic bottles are one of this giant sea bird\u2019s mortal enemies,\u201d says Greenpeace plastics campaigner, Phil Vine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhen Toroa eat these things they die hideously, slowly starving as no other food can get through.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/eOwC4luBzGo\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"eOwC4luBzGo\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Greenpeace has recently launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/61758\/petition\/1\">petition<\/a> calling on the Government to ban plastic drink bottles which quickly gained more than 20,000 signatures.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIn these times of fear and anxiety it\u2019s a relief to see so many people valuing nature over human convenience,\u201d says Vine.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cHere at Greenpeace we\u2019ve been deeply affected by the story of this poor albatross and are now more determined than ever to s\ucceed\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p>The petition follows a successful campaign to ban single-use plastic shopping bags &#8211; another menace in the sea.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNine out of ten New Zealand seabirds eat plastic as part of their regular diet, that\u2019s a terrible indictment on our throwaway society,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n<p>The five minute Greenpeace film tells the backstory of the Toroa\u2019s discovery on a Napier beach, the people who pulled it out of the waves, the vets who tried to save it, and experts who describe this as a grim wake-up call.<\/p>\n\n<p>The juvenile Albatross lasted less than three days at Massey University\u2019s Wildbase centre. The reason for Its death remained a mystery until the post mortem.<\/p>\n\n<p>Veterinary pathologist Stuart Hunter who conducted the examination was surprised to discover an entire 500ml drink bottle inside the bird\u2019s stomach.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cPlastic bottles remain a threat for hundreds of years. Had this albatross died in the ocean and decomposed, the bottle would likely have just floated free, only to be eaten by another bird. Manufacturers have to take responsibility for the products they make.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>New Zealand drink companies sell an estimated one billion plastic bottles every year.
