I\u2019ve been trying to convince the barista there to take my reusable cup (because disposable coffee cups would ultimately end up in the landfill if I used them). He\u2019s pretty reluctant, not sure what the boss would think and kind of can\u2019t be bothered. But luckily I\u2019m ready, I\u2019ve been practicing what I\u2019m gonna say and I reckon I\u2019ve got a pretty good argument. Let\u2019s do this.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Now, before you get concerned about hygiene, hear me out!<\/p>\n\n<p>I\u2019ll tell you what I told the barista Larry*.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Me getting a coffee in Level 3 lockdown<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u201cListen Larry,\u201d I said while the two-metre-spaced queue behind me began growing outside the door and down the road.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not what you think. I\u2019m not some crazy, coffee-obsessed hippy &#8211; okay well I kind of am &#8211; but I\u2019m not just hell-bent on living a zero-waste lifestyle at the cost of other people\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>He looked dubiously at me.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve read the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.govt.nz\/business-work-and-money\/business\/doing-business-at-alert-level-3\/\">government\u2019s notice on the covid-19 website that says reusables are allowed<\/a>, I\u2019ve watched an online how-to guide and I know about all the damage plastic-lined disposable coffee cups and their plastic lids are having on our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>He\u2019s still dubious. Queue is growing. Mutterings behind me of \u201cdesperately need coffee&#8230;\u201d, \u201cbrain is dying\u2026\u201d etc etc and I\u2019m getting glares from fellow customers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Finally in desperation I cry \u201cLarry, think of the turtles!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Sensing my panic, or maybe I\u2019ve touched on the turtle-loving part of Larry\u2019s heart, he agrees to give it a go.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Would you like to give it a go too?<\/h2>\n\n<p>During the first lockdown, the zero waste campaigners from <a href=\"https:\/\/takeawaythrowaways.nz\/\">Takeaway Throwaways<\/a> decided to create simple guides for people wanting to use reusables under the different covid Alert Levels, instead of contributing to the ever-growing amount of Covid-related packaging waste (think coffee cups and takeaway packaging from your local burger joint).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>We asked the guides\u2019 creators, Hannah and Laura, if we could share their hot tips with you and here we are. For those of you who aren\u2019t in Auckland right now, here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/takeawaythrowaways.nz\/blog\/nzs-guide-to-reuseable-serviceware-under-alert-level-2\">the guide for Alert Level 2<\/a> &#8211; it\u2019s a little bit different).<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Firstly, though, is it even possible to use reusables in Alert Levels 2 and 3?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Yes! During Alert levels 3 and 2 the government has confirmed<a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.govt.nz\/business-work-and-money\/business\/doing-business-at-alert-level-3\/\"> businesses are allowed to accept customers\u2019 reusable cups and containers and\/or operate reusable cup and container schemes<\/a>, provided food safety risks are managed and all service complies with the relevant Alert Level general service requirements. For more info, check the \u201cRetail and Hospitality\u201d section of<a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.govt.nz\/business-work-and-money\/business\/doing-business-at-alert-level-3\/\"> this page on the official covid-19 website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get a coffee in your reusable cup during Level Three<\/h2>\n\n<p>Watch this video and follow the instructions below.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/QVvVveNINUg\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"QVvVveNINUg\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Order your takeaway online, on an app or over phone, if possible. You can then let the outlet know you\u2019ll BYO cup\/container or would like your order in a reusable. (I\u2019ve managed to do it without a pre-order, but this sometimes flusters the wait staff, so it\u2019s good to give them a heads up.)<br><\/li><li>BYO CLEAN reusables only &amp; hold onto your lids.<br><\/li><li>Stay outside &amp; remember social distancing when waiting to collect your order (stay 2m away from others at all times). We recommend you also wear a mask (reusable, if you can! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/how-to-make-an-upcycled-reusable-fabric-covid-mask-and-avoid-plastic-pollution\/\">Here\u2019s how to make your own DIY mask <\/a>)<br><\/li><li>When you reach the front of the queue step forward &amp; place your cup on a premarked spot on a table outside the outlet or at the window servery. Hold onto your cup lid.<br><\/li><li>Step back 2m.<br><\/li><li>The barista prepares the drink inside the cafe in a reusable cup or jug.
