But this year\u2019s fires may be even bigger.<\/p>\n\n<p>In spite of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-07-08\/bolsonaro-plans-to-appease-investors-with-ban-on-amazon-fires\" target=\"_blank\">declared fire ban<\/a> and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/world\/americas\/2020\/08\/28\/ap-finds-brazils-plan-to-protect-amazon-has-opposite-effect.html\" target=\"_blank\">presence of the army<\/a>,&nbsp;the number of fire hotspots recorded in August are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-environment-fires-exclusive\/exclusive-brazil-amazon-fires-likely-worst-in-10-years-august-data-incomplete-government-researcher-says-idUSKBN25T349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">likely to be even higher<\/a> than last year.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2020\/09\/9f5b5960-gp0sturqn_web_size.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41712\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption>Fires in L\u00e1brea, Amazonas, Brazil in August 2020. \u00a9 Christian Braga \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the Amazon burning?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Fires in the Amazon rainforest are not natural. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/07\/where-theres-cattle-ranching-and-soybean-farming-theres-fire-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deliberately set by land-grabbers and ranchers<\/a> to expand the land used for cattle grazing and industrial agriculture production.<\/p>\n\n<p>Since Brazil\u2019s President Jair Bolsonaro took office in January 2019, the problem has gotten much worse. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northernminer.com\/news\/brazils-bolsonaro-eyes-amazon-riches\/1003814139\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bolsonaro is pushing for more industrial projects<\/a> in the Amazon.&nbsp;His government is actively dismantling <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/08\/brazil-end-runs-environmental-laws-via-huge-surge-in-executive-acts-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environment laws<\/a>, slashing funding for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-deforestation-climate-change-a\/brazil-slashes-budget-to-fight-climate-change-as-deforestation-spikes-idUSKBN2392LC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental protection agencies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/19\/world\/americas\/bolsonaro-brazil-amazon-indigenous.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demolishing Indigenous land rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>This has given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-52135362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free reign for forest destroyers<\/a> to clear and burn the forest without being held accountable. There has even been a surge in murders of Indigenous forest guardians as land-grabbers move in on Indigenous lands.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2020\/09\/0cb136c2-gp0stupvq_web_size.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41729\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption>Cattle next to fires in L\u00e1brea, Amazonas state. \u00a9 Christian Braga \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s at stake?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Amazon is home to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-2615\/1\/2\/205\" target=\"_blank\">staggering diversity of plants and animals<\/a> \u2013 around 10 percent of all vertebrate species and many species found nowhere else on Earth.&nbsp;Plants and slow-moving animals are burned up in the fires, while fast-moving animals may escape only to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/2019\/08\/how-the-amazon-rainforest-wildfires-will-affect-wild-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">die from habitat loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The fires \u2013 and Bolsonaro\u2019s genocidal policies \u2013 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/19\/world\/americas\/bolsonaro-brazil-amazon-indigenous.html\" target=\"_blank\">threaten Indigenous Peoples\u2019 very existence.<\/a>&nbsp;Indigenous communities in the Amazon also face an immediate serious health threat from the forest fire smoke, as many communities are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2020-07-02\/fires-and-coronavirus-are-deadly-combination-amazon-s-indigenous-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already reeling from high COVID-19 mortality<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>And the impacts of the fires ripple far beyond the region itself. Every person on earth depends on the Amazon to help <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/science-environment-49452736\/amazon-fires-why-the-rainforest-helps-fight-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">regulate our climate<\/a>.&nbsp;The rainforest sucks carbon from the air and stores it in billions of trees. It produces a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.ted.com\/this-airborne-river-may-be-the-largest-river-on-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flying river<\/a>\u201d of water vapour that distributes rain across South America and impacts weather in other continents.<\/p>\n\n<p>If deforestation continues, the entire biome will hit <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2019\/12\/the-tipping-point-is-here-it-is-now-top-amazon-scientists-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an irreversible tipping point<\/a>. The surviving forest would no longer be able to produce its own rainfall and quickly transform into an arid savannah \u2013 killing off species and releasing massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2020\/09\/fe5cbecc-gp0stpoe5_web_size.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41731\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption>Forest next to the Tapaj\u00f3s river, in Sawr\u00e9 Muybu Indigenous Land, home to the Munduruku people, Par\u00e1 state, Brazil. \u00a9 Valdemir Cunha\/Greenpeace.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you do?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Ultimately President Bolsonaro and his government must be made to back down from their assault on Indigenous rights and environmental protections, and instead take concrete action to protect the Amazon.<\/p>\n\n<p>So far the only thing that has influenced Bolsonaro is intense international pressure from companies, investors and governments threatening to cut business ties unless the Amazon is protected.<\/p>\n\n<p>Fast food companies like KFC, McDonald\u2019s and Burger King sourcing from Brazil cannot stand by as the Amazon is being torched, while they still use beef and soya from the country. They should publicly speak out against Bolsonaro\u2019s attacks on forests and Indigenous Peoples rights.<\/p>\n\n<p>Global brands like The North Face, Vans and Timberland have already stopped sourcing goods from Brazil until they can be sure their products are not linked with Amazon destruction.
