{"id":15226,"date":"2020-12-03T07:45:53","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T18:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/?p=15226"},"modified":"2024-07-12T11:51:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T23:51:28","slug":"greenpeace-challenges-coke-with-christmas-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-challenges-coke-with-christmas-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace challenges Coke with Christmas ads"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace is launching a Christmas social media campaign linking Coca Cola with the killing of seabirds in New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/NuB_vS2Umrg\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"NuB_vS2Umrg\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>This trio of hard-hitting videos aims to counter the soft drink giant\u2019s seasonal advertising blitz.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis time of year Coca Cola will try to boost sales of sugary drinks to kiwis, and sadly they\u2019re still choosing to sell the majority of them in single-use plastic bottles,\u201d says Greenpeace plastics campaigner Phil Vine.&nbsp; \u201cThat\u2019s awful news for New Zealand seabirds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Coca Cola Amatil produces hundreds of millions of plastic bottles every year for New Zealand alone. An estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wasteminz.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/The-Truth-about-Plastic-Recycling-report.pdf\">40 per cent <\/a>of those will find their way into the environment &#8211; landfill and the ocean.<\/p>\n\n<p>The bottles that end up in the sea are often identified as food by seabirds. It\u2019s known that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/pnas\/112\/38\/11899.full.pdf\">nine out of ten<\/a> sea birds will eat plastic in their lifetime.<\/p>\n\n<p>Beach audits have found tops from plastic bottles are one of the most common items of pollution on New Zealand shores, they\u2019re also regularly found in the stomachs of dead birds.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cEven as far away as the remote Campbell Island where the Toroa or Royal Albatross nests, chicks have been found with multiple plastic bits in their stomach, fed to them by their unsuspecting parents,\u201d says Vine.<\/p>\n\n<p>From up high, floating drinks bottles can look just like squid to birds like Toroa. Earlier this year a juvenile Albatross died in veterinary hospital care after swallowing a 500ml bottle whole.<\/p>\n\n<p>Graeme Taylor, seabird expert from the Department of Conservation says in the video if that unfortunate bird had died at sea the plastic bottle would have floated free from the body to kill again.<\/p>\n\n<p>Plastic bottles last for hundreds of years eventually breaking down into micro plastics which are eaten by fish and get into the human food chain.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the amount of harm that can be done by just one plastic bottle and multiply it by one billion, the amount of drinks bottles we get through in New Zealand every year, that\u2019s a heck of a lot of damage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>We play host to a third of the world\u2019s seabirds and ninety per cent of our indigenous seabirds are at risk of extinction.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNew Zealand\u2019s seabirds are a national and international taonga, and like humans, deserve to live in an environment where they\u2019re not being poisoned by plastic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is challenging Coca Cola to stop using plastic and revert to non-toxic options such as glass bottles or refillable containers, and calling on the Government to ban single-use plastic drink bottles.<\/p>\n\n<p>More than fifty thousand New Zealanders have signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/petition.act.greenpeace.org.nz\/plastics-banbottles?locale=en-NZ\">Greenpeace petition<\/a> calling on the Government to ban single use plastic drinks bottles.<\/p>\n\n<p>It follows last year\u2019s ban on plastic shopping bags at the checkout, won after a popular campaign.<\/p>\n\n<p>Vine says: \u201cFor a country that cares about nature, banning plastic drinks bottles is the
