{"id":15763,"date":"2021-03-10T13:10:26","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T00:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=15763"},"modified":"2024-07-12T08:29:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T20:29:22","slug":"aotearoa-one-step-closer-to-a-safer-more-resilient-future-with-surrender-of-last-south-island-oil-permit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/aotearoa-one-step-closer-to-a-safer-more-resilient-future-with-surrender-of-last-south-island-oil-permit\/","title":{"rendered":"Aotearoa one step closer to a safer, more resilient future with surrender of last South Island oil permit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace is celebrating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzx.com\/announcements\/368875?fbclid=IwAR2ZPcxbnszn9spfgptNRnpMlyg7_lA6li_6ty0NyCd-fkMUiTAILEsooHI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announcement<\/a> that New Zealand Oil &amp; Gas will relinquish their deep sea exploration permit off the south coast of the South Island as \u201canother win for the climate, for wildlife and for people power\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Known as \u2018Toroa\u2019, the 5,000 square kilometre permit was the last remaining oil and gas exploration permit outside of the Taranaki Basin.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s heartening to know Aotearoa\u2019s seabirds, whales, dolphins and other precious wildlife are safe from the risk of a catastrophic oil spill,\u201d says Greenpeace Campaigner, Amanda Larsson.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWe are one step closer to being the clean, green nation that so many New Zealanders want us to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The announcement comes with little fanfare, but marks another huge moment for people power, for iwi, hap\u016b, environmental groups, and the hundreds of thousands of people who for the last decade have maintained one of the most relentless campaigns of the modern era to put an end to deep sea oil exploration in New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe polluting companies causing climate change are putting our wellbeing at risk. We\u2019re seeing more storms, floods and droughts that are threatening coastal communities, food security and health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cOver the last decade, hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders have stood up to protect their beaches, communities, children and grandchildren against companies intent on drilling for new oil and gas. Today\u2019s announcement is a testament to their efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is calling on the Government to use the Covid recovery as an opportunity to invest in a society powered by clean, renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cBurning dirty fuels like oil, gas and coal is causing a climate crisis. Fortunately, we don\u2019t need to do this anymore. We already have the technology and the tools to power our homes, transport and businesses with clean energy from the sun, wind and water,\u201d says Larsson.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWe can have homegrown and locally-produced energy that doesn\u2019t pollute the air or the ocean.
