{"id":15917,"date":"2021-03-26T12:46:36","date_gmt":"2021-03-25T23:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=15917"},"modified":"2024-07-12T12:01:32","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T00:01:32","slug":"100-million-dead-sharks-its-not-all-about-shark-fin-soup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/100-million-dead-sharks-its-not-all-about-shark-fin-soup\/","title":{"rendered":"100 Million Dead Sharks \u2013 it\u2019s not all about Shark Fin Soup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Shark fin soup is well-known.&nbsp; When we hear that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X13000055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100 million sharks are killed every year<\/a>&nbsp;by the fishing industry, some people may assume it\u2019s because of shark fin soup.&nbsp; But these assumptions are just not true.&nbsp; Only focusing on shark fin soup&nbsp; crowds out other reasons sharks are in trouble, including a huge global market for shark products like meat and oil.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>And there are other reasons we need to stop talking about shark fin soup.&nbsp; Blaming one dish lets everyone else off the hook, while unnecessarily targeting certain countries or groups of people as the main consumers. In recent years the shark meat trade has rapidly expanded and shark products such as cartilage and oil all contribute to a market worth almost&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/fao.org\/3\/i4795e\/i4795e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">$ 1 billion per year<\/a>. All the major fishing countries use destructive fishing practices that result in the killing of up to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X13000055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100 million sharks every year<\/a>&nbsp;and are in large part responsible for the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-020-03173-9\" target=\"_blank\">70% decline in shark populations globally over the past 50 years<\/a>.&nbsp; Whether it\u2019s the use of Fish Aggregating Devices together with huge purse seine nets by France and Spain in tuna fisheries, or illegal driftnet use by Iran and Sri Lanka, or longlines by South Korea, Japan, China or Spain (again!), or fishing for sport off the coast of the US, or even regular old trawling by practically every country with a coastline \u2013 shark fishing takes place everywhere.&nbsp; It\u2019s just that most of it never hits the headlines.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2021\/03\/1d231e52-gp0stpqw6-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"FADs in the Indian Ocean. \u00a9 Will Rose \/ Greenpeace\" class=\"wp-image-46878\" title=\"FADs in the Indian Ocean. \u00a9 Will Rose \/ Greenpeace\"\/><figcaption>Aerial view of a FAD (fish aggregating device) at night in the Indian Ocean. \u00a9 Will Rose \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>When it comes to solving the problem of overfishing sharks, every country has got a role to play.&nbsp; From implementing strict limits to how many can be caught, to agreeing a target of at least 30% ocean protection by 2030.&nbsp; We must create a network of ocean sanctuaries across the world that would act as nurseries and feeding grounds for sharks and other wildlife, helping them recover from years of abuse.&nbsp; Even countries without a coastline can help: implementing strict rules around importing shark products like shark oil (which can be found in plenty of cosmetics), or fish-based fertiliser (which often includes shark in the ingredients).
