Their homes and their lives are in jeopardy whenever they stand up for their communities and for the forest. Wherever Indigenous Land Defenders work to protect their homes \u2014 as well as the world\u2019s most vital ecosystems \u2014 they find themselves increasingly in danger.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In the latest brazen act by land grabbers in the Amazon, the Munduruku People were violently attacked by gold miners as retaliation for efforts to end such illegal activities. It\u2019s important to publicly bear witness to this violence and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/stand-with-the-guardians-of-the-amazon\/\">take action<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/15871\/why-i-stand-with-the-guardians-of-the-amazon\/\">protect the Guardians of the Forest.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.escolhas.org\/en\/amazoniasemgarimpo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criminal miners<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 who have been encouraged by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/45383\/brazil-fire-amazon-pantanal-bolsonaro\/\">anti-environment administration<\/a>&nbsp;of Brazil President Jair Bolsonarro \u2014 attacked a Munduruku village on 26 May, terrorising the people with gunfire and also setting fire to the homes of prominent community leaders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>One of the homes set ablaze belonged to Munduruku leader Maria Leusa. Her home was set on fire with gasoline and burned to the ground,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/brazil-indigenous-miners\/gold-miners-attack-indigenous-village-in-amazon-clash-with-police-idUSL2N2ND2TH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to APIB<\/a>. Several leaders in other communities have also received threats of similar violence,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/05\/26\/human-rights-watch-statement-attacks-against-munduruku-indigenous-leaders#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a local source told Human Rights Watch<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2021\/05\/ab046dad-01-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A building burns in a Munduruku village in the Amazon after an attack from illegal miners in May 2021.\" class=\"wp-image-48039\" title=\"A building burns in a Munduruku village in the Amazon after an attack from illegal miners in May 2021.\"\/><figcaption>A building burns in a Munduruku village after an attack from illegal miners in May 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>The terrorising of the Munduruku and other Indigenous communities in the Amazon must end.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Violence against forest defenders in the Amazon \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/regulation\/its-dangerous-to-be-an-environmental-activist-in-latin-america-a-new-treaty-is-trying-to-change-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and throughout South America<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 has been distressingly common in recent years. As Indigenous leaders like Maria Leusa have organised communities to safeguard their lands and sought enforcement of preservation laws, profit-hungry miners and loggers have continued to invade. Even during the global pandemic, illegal land grabbers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/43837\/mining-yanomami-munduruku-amazon-forest-indigenous-covid-19\/\">continued to bring destruction and COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;to Indigenous communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>This attack came days after the Brazilian Federal Police began taking action against the illegal miners on Munduruku land. The police action is a response to a decision of the Brazilian Supreme Court, which ordered the Federal Government to immediately adopt all measures necessary to protect the life, health, and safety of the Munduruku people. That&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">court decision<\/a>&nbsp;was the result of a series of reports made by Munduruku leaders to the Federal Public Ministry on criminal actions in the region.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2021\/05\/a338fca5-gp1su24y-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A view of mining in the Munduruku Indigenous Land in Brazil from May 2020. \u00a9 Marcos Amend \/ Greenpeace\" class=\"wp-image-47986\" title=\"A view of mining in the Munduruku Indigenous Land in Brazil from May 2020. \u00a9 Marcos Amend \/ Greenpeace\"\/><figcaption>Mining pushes through and devastates the Munduruku Indigenous Land, impacting people, rivers and the forest itself. \u00a9 Marcos Amend \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>These were not the first attacks suffered by the Munduruku leaders who oppose mining and seek to protect their territories, their homes, and the forest where they live. In March, the headquarters of Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Wakoborun, an association of Indigenous women against mining on Indigenous land, which is coordinated by Maria Leusa, was destroyed by miners. In recent weeks, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/illegal-gold-miners-fire-yanomami-indigenous-community-brazil-2021-05-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yanomami people have also suffered constant armed attacks<\/a>&nbsp;carried out by illegal miners in the Yanomami Land.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2021\/05\/325d69fb-gp1sv88m-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Illegal Mining in Yanomami Indigenous Land in Brazil. \u00a9 Christian Braga \/ Greenpeace\" class=\"wp-image-47991\" title=\"Illegal Mining in Yanomami Indigenous Land in Brazil. \u00a9 Christian Braga \/ Greenpeace\"\/><figcaption>Overflight records areas of illegal mining within the Yanomani Indigenous Land in Roraima in April 2021 \u00a9 Christian Braga \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Munduruku Indigenous Land has been systematically invaded by illegal miners: From 2008 to 2020 over 61 km\u00b2 were destroyed.
