{"id":16669,"date":"2021-06-27T14:43:15","date_gmt":"2021-06-27T02:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=16669"},"modified":"2024-07-12T11:50:40","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T23:50:40","slug":"greenpeace-welcomes-single-use-plastic-phase-out-renews-ban-the-bottle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-welcomes-single-use-plastic-phase-out-renews-ban-the-bottle\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace welcomes single-use plastic phase-out but renews call to ban the bottle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace is welcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.govt.nz\/what-government-is-doing\/areas-of-work\/waste\/plastic-phase-out\/detailed-information-on-plastic-items-and-new-general-content-page\/\">the Government\u2019s announcement today<\/a> of a plan to phase out more single-use plastics, but is calling for the ban to cover a wider range of products, including single-use plastic drink bottles like Coke, Pepsi and Pump.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis new commitment to phase out single-use plastics is a win for nature and a win for people power &#8211; but it needs to go further if we are to have any hope of averting the plastic pollution crisis,\u201d says Greenpeace Aotearoa plastics campaigner Juressa Lee.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/petition.act.greenpeace.org.nz\/plastics-banbottles\">petition to \u201cban the bottle\u201d now has over 80,000 signatures<\/a> and the organisation is vowing to renew its efforts to eliminate throwaway plastic bottles.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThrowaway single-use plastic bottles like Coke and Pump are one of the worst culprits in the plastic crisis. Here in Aotearoa it\u2019s estimated that&nbsp; 1 billion single-use plastic bottles are thrown away every year and the majority of those end up in landfill or in the oceans and rivers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is also critical of the Government\u2019s reliance on recycling as a solution.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe fantasy that we can recycle our way out of the plastic pollution predicament is a false solution pedaled to us by the unholy alliance of Big Oil and Big Plastic.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cTo really make a dent in the tide of plastic pollution, we need to get rid of throwaway plastic drink bottles altogether, and establish refillable alternatives and systems to collect and reuse alternatives such as glass.\u201d<br>Greenpeace has recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-hands-nz-rugby-a-red-card-over-oil-industry-sponsorship-deal-with-all-blacks\/\">challenged NZ Rugby to drop its current negotiations with UK petrochemical giant INEOS<\/a> saying \u201cINEOS wants to greenwash its dirty image by associating with New Zealand\u2019s good environmental reputation through the brand of our most iconic sports team, the All Blacks. But now is the time in history when big oil and plastic polluters need the red card not a pat on the back.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t<section\n\t\t\tclass=\"boxout post-15237 When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues. From the Whangape Harbour to Rawhiti via Ngawha, down to Tauranga Moana, over to Tupapa and Ngatangiia in Rarotonga, and north again to Tahiti. My tamariki, through their p\u0101p\u0101, also whakapapa to Toi village in Niue. I was raised by a frugal mother who was always mindful of her impact on the planet, and navigated it accordingly. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
