Trade groups representing the world\u2019s biggest oil and chemical companies – including NZ Rugby\u2019s prospective new sponsor for the All Blacks – INEOS, have been opposing a ground-breaking new proposal to regulate toxic and persistent chemicals in microplastics, according to documents obtained<\/a> by Unearthed<\/em>, Greenpeace UK\u2019s investigations team. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe know that microplastic is everywhere, from Arctic sea ice to tap water, and that it\u2019s linked to the spread of harmful chemicals. Many of these substances have slipped through the net of global regulations so far, but this proposal at the UN Stockholm convention could change that and that\u2019s why the industry is hell-bent on stopping it,\u201d says Juressa Lee, Greenpeace Aotearoa plastics campaigner.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWhere we see a game-changer in protecting marine life from toxic pollution, INEOS and the oil and chemical lobby only sees a threat to profits. We should never accept oil and plastic polluter INEOS as a sponsor for New Zealand\u2019s iconic All Blacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s appalling that in the thick of the climate and biodiversity crisis, our treasured national rugby teams could be branded with the logo of a company responsible for choking the oceans with plastic pollution and driving the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Microplastic pollution has been found practically everywhere on the planet, from oceans, lakes and rivers to raindrops, air, wildlife and even on our dinner plates. Study<\/a> after study<\/a> has shown it can release harmful chemicals and attract other pollutants already present in seawater, ending up in the guts of marine life<\/a> and further up the food chain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Last year, the Swiss government put forward a proposal<\/a> to list a widely-used plastic additive in the Stockholm Convention, the UN\u2019s global treaty on persistent organic pollutants. It\u2019s the first proposal to make a case for a chemical to be listed partly on the basis that it travels long distances via microplastics and plastic debris.<\/p>\n\n

The new Greenpeace investigation reveals that powerful lobby groups<\/a> representing corporations including INEOS, ExxonMobil, Dow Chemical, BASF, DuPont, BP and Shell, are opposing the proposal arguing that there is insufficient evidence to consider the additive a persistent organic pollutant. Emails and documents obtained under transparency laws from the US Environmental Protection Agency show the American Chemistry Council and the European Chemical Industry Council raising concerns about the precedent the proposal could set.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe oil and plastic industry is fast running out of friends and association with celebrated sports teams like the All Blacks from a country like New Zealand is a greenwashing effort to gain the social license they need to keep polluting \u2013 we should never be sucked in to selling INEOS our good name.\u201dGreenpeace is calling on New Zealand Rugby<\/a> to walk away from the deal and over 9,000 people have signed on to a petition backing that call<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n \t\t\t

When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues. The whakapapa of my wh\u0101nau is a journey through Te Moana Nui a Kiwa. From the Whangape Harbour to Rawhiti via Ngawha, down to Tauranga Moana, over to Tupapa and Ngatangiia in Rarotonga, and north again to Tahiti. My tamariki, through their p\u0101p\u0101, also whakapapa to Toi village in Niue. I was raised by a frugal mother who was always mindful of her impact on the planet, and navigated it accordingly. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
