{"id":1755,"date":"2016-08-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/press-release\/hawkes-bay-water-management-issues-show-ruataniwha-dam-must-be-scrapped\/"},"modified":"2024-07-12T15:19:31","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T03:19:31","slug":"hawkes-bay-water-management-issues-show-ruataniwha-dam-must-be-scrapped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/hawkes-bay-water-management-issues-show-ruataniwha-dam-must-be-scrapped\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawke\u2019s Bay water management issues show Ruataniwha Dam must be scrapped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The shambles that is water management in Hawke\u2019s Bay is another reason the Ruataniwha Dam must be scrapped, says Greenpeace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gastro outbreak has revealed serious water management issues in Hawke\u2019s Bay,\u201d said Greenpeace Agriculture spokesperson Genevieve Toop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will get worse if the Ruataniwha Dam proceeds, because the regional council will be both a cornerstone investor and the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a blatant conflict of interest for the council to be both investing in and regulating the dam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gastro outbreak has shown there are already serious local water management issues. The last two weeks do not bode well, even without the water quality regulator being conflicted by pecuniary interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The regional council has launched an investigation the Hastings District Council to see whether the Havelock water bores complied with resource consents. The district council says it has been fully compliant and that it\u2019s a conflict of interest for the regional council to be investigating.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficials ducking for cover does not help the thousands of people who\u2019re sick in the region,\u201d said Ms Toop. \u201cThe regional council should demonstrate a commitment to cleaning up local waterways by dropping the plan for the Ruataniwha dam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>>Ms Toop said the dam would put water sources further at risk by enabling the intensification of dairy farming in the Tukituki catchment.\u00a0 There have been suggestions the Tukituki River may be the source of the current water contamination. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happened in Havelock is a massive wake up call. It\u2019s time people\u2019s health was put before big irrigation and industrial dairying.
