{"id":1942,"date":"2017-05-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/press-release\/government-delays-morally-repugnant-case-against-greenpeace-activists\/"},"modified":"2024-07-12T15:42:59","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T03:42:59","slug":"government-delays-morally-repugnant-case-against-greenpeace-activists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/government-delays-morally-repugnant-case-against-greenpeace-activists\/","title":{"rendered":"Government delays \u201cmorally repugnant\u201d case against Greenpeace activists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government has asked for more time to take a case against three Greenpeace activists who put themselves in the path of the world\u2019s largest seismic oil ship, the Amazon Warrior, in April. <\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace Executive Director, Dr Russel Norman, volunteer, Sara Howell, and Ashburton kite maker, Gavin Mulvay, were due to enter a plea in the Napier District Court on May 31.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) requested an adjournment.\u00a0 Now Greenpeace is calling on the Government Department to drop the charges altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case is morally repugnant,\u201d says Norman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government is prosecuting climate activists and pandering to oil companies. Instead of protecting our communities and environment, the Government is wasting time and resources on taking peaceful protesters to court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norman and the two other activists are the first people in New Zealand to be charged under a controversial amendment to the Crown Minerals Act, known as the \u201cAnadarko Amendment\u201d. It was passed in 2013 to quash protest against oil vessels at sea.<\/p>\n<p>MBIE has asked for a delay in the case because it has yet to get its paperwork ready.<\/p>\n<p>Norman says Greenpeace has <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/ea-action\/action?ea.client.id=1939&amp;ea.campaign.id=68140&amp;utm_source=greenpeace.org&amp;utm_medium=press+release&amp;utm_campaign=climate&amp;utm_content=press+release\">launched a petition<\/a> for the charges to be dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re calling on MBIE to drop the charges against us and listen to the thousands of people up and down the country who are demanding climate action,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Amazon Warrior is out there blasting our ocean floor in search of the very oil we can\u2019t burn if we want a stable climate for us and our kids. Climate change is threatening everyone and everything, and it\u2019s getting a whole lot worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn New Zealand this year, we\u2019ve seen a deluge of devastating storms, flooding, droughts and fires in the space of a few short months.
