\"BP<\/a>Imagine if the BP Deepwater Horizon oil disaster happened in NZ waters.<\/p>\n

It would stretch from Wellington to Christchurch and would devastate our coastline and fisheries for decades.<\/p>\n

This is now a very real risk as the Government approves new deep sea oil exploration in NZ waters.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>Just like the Government’s recent proposals to open our best conservation land for mining, new offshore oil drilling is a move in the wrong direction for New Zealand.<\/div>\n

Coal and oil directly cause climate change.\u00a0 In the era of climate change New Zealand needs a better vision for the future.<\/p>\n

If enough of us show the Government that we want a future for NZ that includes investing in clean technologies and not one that sees a return to 19th century extractive industries like oil drilling and coal mining – we can steer NZ towards a better future.<\/p>\n

Greenpeace’s Energy [R]evolution demonstrates how the world can get from where we are now, to where we need to be in terms of phasing out fossil fuels, cutting CO2 whilst ensuring energy security.<\/p>\n

This includes illustrating how the world’s carbon emissions from the energy and transport sectors alone can peak by 2015 and be cut by over 80 percent by 2050. This phase-out of fossil fuels offers other substantial benefits such as independence from world market fossil fuel prices as well as the creation of millions of new green jobs.
