New Zealand is now among the low-ranking countries of the world in moves to address climate change through meaningful action.<\/p>\n\n<p>The CCPI rates New Zealand \u2018low\u2019 for greenhouse gas emissions, and the country has also dropped to \u2018low\u2019 for climate policy. New Zealand\u2019s performance overall was marked down because of the free pass given to our largest emitter &#8211; industrial agriculture.<\/p>\n\n<p>The CCPI also notes that New Zealand\u2019s \u2018Zero Carbon\u2019 Act contains no policies for cutting emissions, or appropriate measures to fully meet the 2050 target.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIndustrial dairy, driven by massive quantities of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser, is at the heart of the Ardern Government\u2019s failure to deliver on climate. In terms of emissions &#8211; dairy is to New Zealand what coal is to Australia. Until this Government acts to cut synthetic nitrogen fertiliser and lower dairy stocking rates it is failing on climate\u201d, says Greenpeace Aotearoa lead agriculture campaigner Christine Rose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>New reports also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.govt.nz\/assets\/Uploads\/Documents\/Emissions-Trading-Scheme\/Reports\/Emissions-returns\/Participant-Emissions-Report.pdf\">released today<\/a> by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) further highlight agriculture\u2019s massive greenhouse gas emission footprint, which is more than New Zealand\u2019s domestic coal, gas and petrol\/diesel transport emissions combined.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe new EPA report highlights that the dairy industry, together with its fertiliser industry enabler, are the country\u2019s biggest climate criminals,\u201d says Rose.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no wonder that&nbsp; New Zealand\u2019s credibility is in tatters at the COP 26 climate conference, the Ardern Government has failed to take meaningful action on our biggest climate polluter &#8211; industrial dairy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAdd to that, polluted rivers, contaminated drinking water and biodiversity losses here and abroad, industrial dairying is an environmental \u2018smoking gun\u2019, loaded with fertiliser, too many cows, and a government that\u2019s failing to address it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>67% of all New Zealand\u2019s synthetic nitrogen fertiliser is used by the Dairy industry.
