National governments and multinational corporations will gather for the next session of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/environmentassembly\/unea5\">UN Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2)<\/a>, presenting the international community with a historic opportunity to make substantial decisions on plastic pollution.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/50276\/greenpeace-calls-for-global-treaty-to-include-the-whole-life-cycle-of-plastics\/\">Greenpeace and allies are calling for a treaty<\/a> that will quickly move us away from unnecessary plastic packaging and support the development of refill and reuse systems on a global scale. We need a treaty that includes the entire life cycle of plastic, which focuses on reducing the use of plastic &#8211; otherwise the impact of plastic on climate, environmental justice, and human health will not be addressed. Anything less will be a missed opportunity.<br><br>Decision-makers don\u2019t have to look very far from where they are right now to understand why an ambitious global plastics treaty is not only necessary, but urgent if we are to restore dignity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/events\/online-event\/virtual-launch-neglected-environmental-justice-impacts-plastic-pollution?_ga=2.219819289.1603392551.1643015221-2145700004.1633340980\">communities that have been ravaged by plastic pollution<\/a>. Townships aren\u2019t exactly known for their aesthetics; in fact, communities like mine, which were created under the apartheid government as a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailyvox.co.za\/what-exactly-is-spatial-apartheid-and-why-is-it-still-relevant-in-2017-mohammed-jameel-abdulla\/\">spatial oppression<\/a>, were underserviced under the past regime and remained so in South Africa\u2019s new democratic dispensation because of the lack of wealth circulating in the community.\u00a0<br><br>Over the past two decades, plastic pollution has made an already uncomfortable living environment even worse. Year after year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/49008\/flooding-in-cameroon-greenpeace-africa-demands-effective-and-rapid-government-response\/\">annual flooding<\/a> caused by heavy rains and blocked drainage systems claims hundreds of lives, leaves countless more displaced, and destroys the livelihoods of families that are already struggling to get by.<\/p>\n\n<p>And no matter how many clean-ups communities do to curb the impacts of plastic pollution, the constant and increasing supply of plastic to the fast-growing population <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/48880\/cameroon-plastic-pollution-flood-deaths\/\">undermines people&#8217;s battle against plastic pollution<\/a>. Local fishers an hour out of the busy city of Matadi say that the plastic pollution makes its way into their water systems, interfering with their ability to provide for their families.<br><br>According to fishers, not only has the number of fish decreased dramatically because of plastic, but they often find plastic in their nets and inside the fish that they catch (<em>in fact, plastic is more frequently finding its way into <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/blog\/6016\/3-everyday-foods-that-contain-microplastics\/\"><em>our food<\/em><\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/fr\/les-blogs\/49098\/documentaire-sur-la-situation-du-plastique-sur-le-fleuve-congo-matadi\/\">Plastic pollution is interfering with food security<\/a> in the region, which relies on fish as a source of protein. They are pleading with their government to intervene before it is too late, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/13403\/greenpeace-africa-reacts-to-strict-measures-against-water-sachets-announced-in-kinshasa\/\">their existing legislation<\/a> just needs to be enforced.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U1WRwRVhL8g&amp;t=26s\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2022\/02\/65ee43fb-screen-shot-2022-02-18-at-12.38.43-pm-1024x509.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50957\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2022\/02\/65ee43fb-screen-shot-2022-02-18-at-12.38.43-pm-1024x509.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2022\/02\/65ee43fb-screen-shot-2022-02-18-at-12.38.43-pm-600x298.png 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2022\/02\/65ee43fb-screen-shot-2022-02-18-at-12.38.43-pm-768x381.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2022\/02\/65ee43fb-screen-shot-2022-02-18-at-12.38.43-pm-1536x763.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2022\/02\/65ee43fb-screen-shot-2022-02-18-at-12.38.43-pm-510x253.png 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2022\/02\/65ee43fb-screen-shot-2022-02-18-at-12.38.43-pm.png 1760w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Nairobi, Kenya: The forces holding us back <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Even in what is said to be one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/13166\/kenya-still-at-risk-despite-un-plastics-nod-greenpeace\/\">most progressive countries in the world<\/a> as far as anti-plastic legislation is concerned, there is still no avoiding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/blogs\/6837\/plasticmonster-pollution-by-the-bottle\/\">the flood of plastic<\/a> on the roadsides and in waterways of the Kenyan capital.<\/p>\n\n<p><br>Since Kenya\u2019s ban of the plastic bag and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/11283\/greenpeace-launches-the-story-of-plastic-documentary-calls-for-a-total-ban-on-single-use-plastics\/\">subsequent ban<\/a> on all plastic items in national parks and conservation areas, there has been talk of expanding restrictions because of the impact they\u2019ve had on improving the environment. Despite these efforts, there has been <a href=\"https:\/\/unearthed.greenpeace.org\/2020\/08\/30\/plastic-waste-africa-oil-kenya-us-trade-deal-trump\/\">international pressure to drop its existing restrictions<\/a>, which has opened the Kenyan public\u2019s eyes to the beast that they are really facing.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>So, what do we actually need to defeat the plastic pollution crisis?<\/strong><br><br>We need a solution that matches the scale of the problem, and a global treaty that includes the entire life cycle of plastic is that solution. We need a strong global plastics treaty that ensures a holistic approach to ending the plastic pollution crisis and not one that is laced with loopholes which allows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/globalbrandauditreport2020\/\">the top plastic polluters like Coca-Cola<\/a> to continue flooding the world with even more plastic.<\/p>\n\n<p>A strong global plastics treaty means:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>creating a legally binding instrument to ensure compliance from governments and industry;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>keeping oil and gas in the ground, and protecting our climate;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>big brands switching to refill and reuse systems and reducing single use plastic pollution;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>holding countries accountable for managing their own waste and ending waste colonialism; and&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>governments working to ensure a just transition for workers and the health of the most affected communities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Call To Action<\/strong>: <a My tamariki, through their p\u0101p\u0101, also whakapapa to Toi village in Niue. I was raised by a frugal mother who was always mindful of her impact on the planet, and navigated it accordingly. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
