For years, Greenpeace has vigorously advocated for sustainable and equitable tuna fisheries in the Pacific.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Greenpeace\u2019s vision for a transformed tuna fishery in Pacific Island\u00a0countries includes the following key aspects. Methods of fishing\u00a0used would be pole and line, troll, handline, free-school purse\u00a0seine and best-practice longline. Tuna species would be harvestedat sustainable levels, with minimal bycatch.<\/p>\n

Tuna fishing vessels\u00a0would be owned and operated by Pacific island communities and\u00a0local entrepreneurs. Artisanal and village-based fisheries would be\u00a0organised as cooperatives, to coordinate the sale of their catch and\u00a0to set the strategic direction for their fishery.<\/p>\n

Fish caught would be\u00a0processed in the Pacific Islands region for canning, as well as for\u00a0the high value-added and fresh or frozen tuna markets and would\u00a0be \u2018traceable\u2019 down the supply chain. Products from such fisheries\u00a0would receive independent verification of both environmental and\u00a0social standards that can also ensure higher prices are fetched\u00a0on the international market compared to unsustainable products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
