{"id":51897,"date":"2022-05-09T12:40:25","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T00:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=51897"},"modified":"2024-07-11T12:57:23","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:57:23","slug":"erp-must-cut-big-dairy-pollution-to-be-credible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/erp-must-cut-big-dairy-pollution-to-be-credible\/","title":{"rendered":"Emissions Reduction Plan must cut big dairy pollution to be credible"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa says that to be credible, the Government\u2019s upcoming Emissions Reduction Plan must cut climate pollution from intensive dairy &#8211; New Zealand\u2019s biggest climate polluter.<\/p>\n\n<p>In a speech today, Climate Change Minister, James Shaw, announced that on May 16, the Government will release its first-ever &#8211; and much delayed &#8211; Emissions Reduction Plan.<br><br>However, lead agriculture campaigner Christine Rose says \u201cthe Minister\u2019s speech diverted attention from the Government\u2019s failure to cut emissions from intensive dairying.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIntensive dairying is the number one cause of climate pollution in Aotearoa. To be a credible tool for fighting climate change, the Emissions Reduction Plan must dramatically reduce dairy pollution by halving the herd and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/new-zealands-hidden-climate-killer-synthetic-nitrogen\/\">phasing out<\/a> the<a href=\"https:\/\/petition.act.greenpeace.org.nz\/agriculture-fertiliser\"> synthetic nitrogen fertiliser<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/action\/petition-phase-out-imported-feed-like-pke\/\">supplementary feed (such as PKE)<\/a> that drives it.\u201d<br><br>Greenpeace\u2019s 32,000-strong petition calls for the Emissions Reduction Plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/petition.act.greenpeace.org.nz\/food-regenerative-farming-fund\">include a $1 billion regenerative agriculture fund<\/a>, to deliver a Just Transition for farmers, and support a shift to more plant-based, regenerative organic farming.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe Emissions Reduction Plan must turn around the farming sector, from being Aotearoa\u2019s biggest polluter, into a solution for tackling climate change and restoring nature, through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/campaign\/regenerative-farming-revolution\/\">more plant-based regenerative organic agriculture<\/a>,\u201d says Rose.<br><br>\u201cTo date, the Government\u2019s response to the existential climate crisis has been desperately inadequate. Despite declaring a climate emergency and pledging to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030, industrial dairy has been given a free pass. Both the Emissions Trading Scheme &#8211; where the taxpayer pays for the dairy sector\u2019s emissions &#8211; and the agri-industry alternative, He Waka Eke Noa &#8211; is expected to reduce emissions by less than 1%. Greenpeace Aotearoa is also calling for the Emissions Reduction Plan to include bold\u00a0 policies in transport and energy, such as a wide-reaching solar and insulation rollout, and investing in making public transport more quality, frequent, and free for all.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<section\n\t\t\tclass=\"boxout post-16603 \"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n\t\t\t<a\n\t\t\t\tdata-ga-category=\"Take Action
