The partnership\u2019s first&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hewakaekenoa.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/He-Waka-Eke-Noa-Draft-Engagement-Document-November-December-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">proposal<\/a>, released six months ago, was expected to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/politics\/300461560\/climate-change-official-plan-to-price-and-cut-agricultural-emissions-would-lead-to-less-than-1-per-cent-reduction\" target=\"_blank\">result in a less than 1 percent reduction<\/a>&nbsp;in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.<br><br>Greenpeace&nbsp;Aotearoa lead agriculture campaigner Christine Rose, says &#8220;We\u2019ll be analysing He Waka Eke Noa\u2019s proposals closely, to ensure they don\u2019t get away with cooking the books to appear more ambitious than they really are. There is no room for dodgy tactics, such as early suggestions by industry of claiming emissions reductions from the upcoming freshwater reforms.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;If the government accepts a cooked He Waka Eke Noa proposal, they will be saying it is ok for high polluting industries to write their own climate policy, invent their own measures of success, and attempt to manipulate the public into thinking responsible change is being made.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;The government needs to take the climate change impacts of New Zealand\u2019s agricultural sector far more seriously, and must hold industrial dairy accountable. The agri-industry partnership is like a cartel, protecting its own interests at the cost of everyone else, and the planet.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;DairyNZ has&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Adam_Currie_NZ\/status\/1507163685604986883?s=20&amp;t=X_DboDMHFCQ_EO5rQt_98w\" target=\"_blank\">admitted<\/a>&nbsp;that it \u2018managed to keep farmers out of the Emissions Trading scheme\u2019 by launching He Waka Eke Noa,&#8221; says Rose.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace&nbsp;argues that the purpose of He Waka Eke Noa is to obfuscate and delay real action on agricultural emissions, because He Waka Eke Noa also gives a free pass to intensive dairying, while penalising less intense farming operations like beef farmers and M\u0101ori owned farms, who will pay more than dairy.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;We all deserve a stable climate, healthy rivers, and safe drinking water. But industrial agriculture, especially intensive dairy, is condemning our rivers, climate and health to contamination, pollution and chaos. Action to reduce agricultural emissions means tackling the dairy industry &#8211; New Zealand\u2019s worst climate polluter &#8211; and that means far fewer cows, it means cutting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/new-zealands-hidden-climate-killer-synthetic-nitrogen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">synthetic nitrogen fertiliser<\/a>, and it means backing a shift to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/what-is-regenerative-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regenerative farming<\/a>,&#8221; says Rose.<\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
