{"id":52627,"date":"2022-07-27T11:34:58","date_gmt":"2022-07-26T23:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=52627"},"modified":"2024-07-11T12:56:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:56:28","slug":"ccc-misses-the-dairy-with-ets-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/ccc-misses-the-dairy-with-ets-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Commission misses the dairy with Emissions Trading Scheme advice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace says that the Climate Change Commission\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecommission.govt.nz\/our-work\/advice-to-government-topic\/nz-ets\/our-advice-on-the-nz-ets\/nz-ets-unit-limits-and-price-control-settings-for-2023-2027\">advice<\/a> to the Government on the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) misses the mark because it continues to exempt New Zealand\u2019s biggest climate polluter &#8211; agriculture.<\/p>\n\n<p>Agriculture makes up half of New Zealand\u2019s emissions, with intensive dairy the largest single emitter in the country &#8211; accounting for a quarter of all climate pollution.\u00b9&nbsp; While today\u2019s proposals are silent on agricultural emissions, the Climate Change Commission notes the risks that not enough is being done to drive down emissions &#8211; threatening New Zealand\u2019s comparative advantage and loading costs onto future generations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cDisastrous storms, floods and heatwaves this week show we don\u2019t have a moment to lose in cutting emissions from intensive dairy, New Zealand\u2019s biggest climate polluter,\u201dsays Greenpeace lead agriculture campaigner Christine Rose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe Government must bring agriculture into the Emissions Trading Scheme and turn off the tap on the drivers of agricultural pollution &#8211; synthetic nitrogen fertiliser and too many cows.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Though there is \u2018backstop\u2019 legislation in place while the Government considers agri-industry self-regulation through \u2018He Waka Eke Noa\u2019, according to Greenpeace Aotearoa it would take agriculture almost 100 years to be included at the same rate the public pays for emissions.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Climate Change Commission finds the ETS will have a disproportionate impact on lower income households and those least able to adjust, and that domestic distributional impacts and other equity considerations need to be managed.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cTo be an equitable and efficient system that addresses the climate crisis, the Emissions Trading Scheme must fully include industrial dairying now. While agriculture gets a free pass from the ETS, regular people across the country are having to pay the price and pick up the slack,\u201d says Rose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe Government must address the causes of climate change, not just price them. That means phasing out synthetic nitrogen fertiliser and halving the dairy herd.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/new-zealands-hidden-climate-killer-synthetic-nitrogen\/\">Synthetic nitrogen fertiliser<\/a> produces twice the emissions of pre-Covid domestic aviation, and by enabling dairy intensification it\u2019s responsible for producing much more than that, including much of the most potent greenhouse gases, methane and nitrous oxide.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNow is the time to usher in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/what-is-regenerative-agriculture\/\">regenerative farming revolution<\/a>, which works with nature &#8211; not against it. A better farming future is possible but the need for action is urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
