{"id":53553,"date":"2022-11-03T08:01:35","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T19:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=53553"},"modified":"2024-07-11T12:33:20","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:33:20","slug":"big-brands-fail-their-own-voluntary-commitment-to-eliminate-plastic-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/big-brands-fail-their-own-voluntary-commitment-to-eliminate-plastic-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Big brands fail their own voluntary commitment to eliminate plastic pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) just released the <a href=\"https:\/\/emf.thirdlight.com\/link\/f6oxost9xeso-nsjoqe\/@\/preview\/1?o\">Global Commitment 2022 Progress Report<\/a>, which found that companies will miss key 2025 targets for a circular economy for plastic. <\/p>\n\n<p>The report revealed that the target of achieving 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging by 2025 will \u2018almost certainly\u2019 not be met, and reported an overall increase of virgin plastic use back to 2018 levels.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace USA Global Plastics Project Leader Graham Forbes says the report clearly shows that voluntary commitments from companies to address plastic pollution have failed.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Instead of tackling the plastic pollution crisis, big brands like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Mars actually increased the amount of plastic they create since the EMF Global Commitment was launched in 2018.<br><br>\u201cThe EMF report pours cold water on the celebrated commitments made by big corporations who signed on to this high-profile project to eliminate plastic pollution. <\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;This underlines the need for governments to ensure that the global plastic treaty<strong>,<\/strong> which starts negotiations shortly, delivers major reductions in plastic production and use and accelerates a just transition to the reuse economy we need.
