{"id":58063,"date":"2022-12-19T19:58:27","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T06:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=58063"},"modified":"2024-07-11T12:32:48","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:32:48","slug":"plastic-polluter-coca-cola-receives-early-christmas-message-from-greenpeace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/plastic-polluter-coca-cola-receives-early-christmas-message-from-greenpeace\/","title":{"rendered":"Plastic polluter Coca-Cola receives early Christmas message from Greenpeace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa has sent Coca-Cola an early Christmas gift by brand jamming the plastic polluter\u2019s products in Auckland.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Volunteers concerned about plastic pollution headed back to the supermarkets once again and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NS4MxPTHc9o\">planted hangers on Coke bottles<\/a> to call out Coke as the world\u2019s biggest contributor to the problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>They&#8217;ve joined the Greenpeace Aotearoa call on the Government to ban single-use plastic bottles and mandate refill and reuse solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa plastics campaigner Juressa Lee says, \u201cCoca-Cola was announced this year as the world\u2019s worst plastic polluter for the fifth consecutive year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Lee added that during the summer months when families are spending time at the beach or the park, Coca-Cola intensifies its greenwashing because people are increasingly unwilling to allow the endless plastic production and pollution to continue.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cCoca-Cola\u2019s big marketing machine intends to mystify the public about the pollution it creates and give the illusion that Coke is somehow synonymous with summer days and holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cCoca-cola floods the media and social media with greenwash that consuming their products will make summer more enjoyable but the&nbsp; reality is, they are making it worse. Our oceans, waterways, green spaces and wildlife are all suffering from plastic pollution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Lee says the hangers put over Coca-Cola products tell the truth of how pervasive plastic is and how Coke is the worst culprit as well as calling for the Government to ban single-use plastic bottles.<\/p>\n\n<p>The action comes days after research revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/tonnes-of-airborne-microplastics-another-reason-to-support-a-global-plastics-treaty-greenpeace\/\">74 metric tonnes of airborne microplastics<\/a> are dispersed onto Auckland every year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Lee says \u201cThis has been estimated to be equivalent to 3 million bottles raining down on T\u0101maki Makaurau. In Aotearoa, approximately 1 billion plastic bottles are being produced and sold every year, and we are truly now seeing how pervasive plastics and microplastics are in our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa\u2019s call for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/the-nz-government-has-100000-reasons-to-ban-single-use-plastic-bottles\/\">ban on single-use plastic bottles has been signed by over 100,000<\/a> people, indicating the public\u2019s desire to see urgent change become action.&nbsp;<br><br>\u201cIt\u2019s time for Coca-Cola to change and return to refill and reuse systems. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues. The whakapapa of my wh\u0101nau is a journey through Te Moana Nui a Kiwa. From the Whangape Harbour to Rawhiti via Ngawha, down to Tauranga Moana, over to Tupapa and Ngatangiia in Rarotonga, and north again to Tahiti. My tamariki, through their p\u0101p\u0101, also whakapapa to Toi village in Niue. I was raised by a frugal mother who was always mindful of her impact on the planet, and navigated it accordingly. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
